The other thing sadly lacking is a differential of cost and size to make it useful for buggy builders. Years ago, it struck me that I should be able to design and build one using roller chain, but several reams of scratch paper later I snapped to the fact it was a fool's errand...and not my first.....Joe

Ya ....I have spent years trying to come up with a Diy solution... It just isnt that easy... Even a 2 speed...
2 main factors involved... the clutching element and the drive engagement element. Both requiring some degree of precision machined parts...
So with out tools and/or money...
Here we are...

I am tolerably well off for tooling and the ability to make tooling and custom cutters and such, but I am always caught in the middle. If I make one of something, somebody will want me to build another, and if I can't come up with a way to build it for a reasonable price, I can only deal with folks who are drowning in money...not usually my favorites, although I got nothing specific against them.

I am highly partial to manual clutches, and have been satisfied with slack-belt on my trail scooters, but obviously one cannot sit around and idle with the clutch disengaged for long without belt wear. I still think that friction disc might work well up to 6 HP or so, and may not be able to resist trying it unless I can find failed examples somewhere on the WWW....Joe

A decent diff would be good. A locking diff would be amazing. They're REALLY not that complicated as all you have to do is lock one output shaft to the housing.

NOW, you have me all a-twitter :roflol:

In automotive parlance, a locked diff is the same as what you guys call a live axle. Different critter all together. Bigger puzzle is how you lock one output shaft to the housing and still have both drive (rear) wheels turn.

If you are talking about welding it to the spider gear housing, different story.

When we locked stock car diffs, we welded the spider gears up solid....ALL of them....Joe

No, the mechanics of a differential mean if one side is locked to the housing, both are locked. Say you had a typical go kart diff, and welded a lovejoy half to the sprocket, so the axle can free spin through the center. Adding another lovejoy half, keyed to the axle would lock the differential, making it a live axle. It only needs to be on one side. If you could make that keyed half on the axle slide in and out with a fork via a lever, you'd have a lockable diff, which would be awesome for off road karts. When I say diff housing, I really mean the carrier, which doubles as the housing on a kart diff, but would be contained within the housing on a car diff.

That's one thing about diffs that people have trouble wrapping their heads around. Lock one side, you automatically lock both.

Got it.

I like the concept of a ratcheting type rear end, but you have to abandon all hopes of a reverse gear with one. Just can't have everything...Joe

I'm old and slow, and maybe the last guy on the planet to favor scuff brakes against the tire tread with hard maple wood brake shoes.

Things that would kill younger and faster men please me to no end... :) .....Joe
