If I had the room, I'd go for a road course that incorporates one of the straights into an oval.
Best of both worlds.
I'll let those with track prep experience chime in with their advice.
Proper dirt track prep/maintenance can be labor intensive to end up with a surface that lasts.

Thanks Jandj. I've been trying to decide on an oval or a road course, hadn't considered making it both. Interesting!

That crossed my mind as well, what Liability might be involved should someone get hurt. Maybe have them sign a waiver or something?

Yes. I had a private motocross track and some kids were on it and crashed while I wasn't home. Took several years and several thousand dollars to get it dropped. They called it an attractive nuisance. They offered to settle for $250,000 at one point which my homeowners policy would've covered, but it was on principle at that point so I told them to stuff it.
That said, I'm friends with the guy that owns the local go kart track, and his insurance company made him fence it in and keep a locked gate so that makes me think it's more common than one would assume.

That's what I was afraid of. Can't do anything anymore. Going to have to rethink the whole thing. You know, 50 years ago this would'ny have been an issue but today with people being "sue-happy"... it's just a shame you can't do things on your own property. I saw something the other day that said: Property taxes feels a lot like rent.

I have started my own track. But it's around the 5 acre yard I have.

If possible have it fenced then have barbed wire going across the top, with a salt pit on the inside and outside of the fence. Then have security cameras in place with flood lights. Trespassers are never prosecuted hard enough for it to stop.
Since you don't want a road course, packed dirt/clay could be fun.
