Good afternoon guys, & happy new year . I have a quick question that I will soon post a video of. I just got my go kart running, it has a gx390 with a heavy duty cc 1in shaft, 10tooth clutch sprocket, 60t axle sprocket, #41 chain. Every time I accelerate it doesn't accelerate smoothly, it's rough and sounds likes some is getting stuck but as you hold the gas pedal down it soon rides smooth. The initial take off is rough. I know it's hard without video or pictures. I will post them. But if anyone can maybe tell me what could be the problem. I aligned the clutch and axle sprocket maybe it still needs to be aligned. By the initial acceleration is very rough and not smooth like it should be.

What is the tire size? Im thinking a ratio/tire size problem...

the tire size in the front are AT145/0-6*** REAR TIRES: 16X6.50-8NHS

How's the chain and sprockets? Are they lined up nicely? How about wear?
Are the teeth straight or curved?

The chain is brand new, & lined up nicely & there isn't much wear.

Is the chain too loose? it may be jumpin around on the sprocket

i noticed the chain was too loose when i first installed it so i tighten it & still is feeling like it jumps arounds the sprocket. thats actually a perfect example of what the go kart is doing jumping around the sprocket.

If the chain is tight, oil the clutch.

Where exactly on the clutch do i oil? the sprocket ?

Builder- the clutch is oiled at the snapring... just a few drops of regular oil....Spin to work in...

(via- Kartfab)

Oh.... whats the OD of the rear tires... thats where the main factor comes in....

Seriously. Photos of the driveline and/or the business end of the kart, we need.
It could be anything.

I think you mean the rim size is 6.5"....
The OD is outside diameter......A quick look on those tires are, 16" is the OD.....

well..
it could be a gearing issue however unlikely it sounds 16" rears 13hp engine and 6:1 ratio sounds like nothing to worry about eeven with a cent clutch..
BUT that's for a go kart, not a two seater buggy carrying two 200 lbs passengers for example,
sooo we might need more info on the kart indeed to make a final call.

less than ideal acceleration could also be caused by the engine itself (gummed up idle circuit in the carb) wrong jetting or just messed up fuel mix or a busted head gasket (loosing compression just enough to not have enough power)

you could have a mechanical problem in the axle setup (bearings seized, brake rotor locking against the caliper... etc)

difficult to tell without pics or in your case even a video (let us hear the engine)

But first let's get the axle out of the way ... just lift the rear and spin the wheels..
if they spin smoothly and freely, there's nothing to worry about in that regard,
axle sprocket and brakerotor as well as bearings can all be removed from the list again.
Now check your kart ratio again..
weight? (that's TOTAL weight incl all passengers seated mind you!)
tyre size, and chain ratio we know already as well as nominal engine power.

And if that too passes .. you might have some fuel mix adjustment ahead, maybe even a carb clean (hopefully nothing else)
