Hey everyone, I am new here. I just picked up a 2 seater Carter go kart from a friend for free. My issue is that it has bent rear axles and i can't find a model number anywhere on it. This thing has been repainted probably four times so any stickers are long gone and i don't see any numbers stamped into it. I was wondering who might sell axles for these things, I haven't had any luck after lots of searching. I don't have any pics yet, but will post some asap. It originally had a tecumseh 6.5 horse engine, has a torque converter and the rear axle has a differential with two separate shafts, one short, one long. Also has dual drum brakes in the rear. I think it is about 10 years old but not sure. Hopefully some of this info helps. Thanks in advance.

No i haven't yet because i wouldn't even know what info to give them in order for them to try to figure it out. But i may just try that tomorrow.

BTW- that camber is horrible. You'll need to correct that. I'm guessing that much like the frame I just picked up, the front axle got crash damaged, and somebody successfully slaughtered the "repair".

Yeah that is the next thing on the list once i get the rear axle situation figured out. This thing has had the snot beat out of it. I was told it was taken off a ledge that was a couple feet high, smashed into a tree and not to mention totally submerged under water.
Here is a pic of the entire axle assembly put back together hand tight, pic of inside the diff, and the axle itself which needs to be replaced. Can't find a single part number on any rear axle parts either.
The axle has splines which lock into the gear inside the diff on one end and just has the usual threads and keyway on the other end.

looks like a standard 3 or 4 bolt flange 1" live axle, most likely
will be 36" to 40" long.
You'll need http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_21285_21285 measure the distance axle tip to axle tip on your front end will give you a rough estimate on rear axle. (personally I like my rear axle a little wider.)

Thanks for that link. That is exactly the info i was trying to get a hold of. Those prices make my wallet sad. I think I will try to fix my axles before spending 100 bucks on a 2 foot piece of steel.

You're going to end up saving both money and disappointment in performance by using this opportunity to convert to a live axle. Purchase an axle that is the correct overall width, and either a new sprocket, or new hub to fit the existing sprocket. You should be able to reuse everything else.
I was thinking about just swapping the whole set up for a live axle. I could just reuse the the mounting system with the tubes that hold the bearings in place. Would the diff set up really perform poorly? I kind of thought it would be better than a live axle in every way, unless the kart really got stuck.I could make a live axle from a piece of 1" round stock about 4 feet long and machine it and make a hub to reuse the sprocket. I have a lathe at home.
A diff doesn't work too well on loose offroad surfaces. It works well on solid tarmac where there is no slippage
