I am running my go kart hard off-road. Lots of breaking and hard accelerating. It was running great for over an hour until all of the sudden it started losing power and then cut out within 30 seconds. It starts right back up but runs very weak and the most it will run for is about a minute if you play with the gas right. I did try this a few times.
Before the issue it was making kind of a steam releasing sound when I would press the gas. I should also mention that the kart runs with a lot more power the fuller the gas is. The gas was a little over half full and when I topped off the gas I noticed an increase in power right after. At about 1/4 gas the kart will cut out on hard turns or hills but currently I have a full tank so I know this can't be the issue. I am wondering what you guys think the problem is?

Sorry. Yes it is a briggs and stratton 5hp. But why would it run great for an hour and then start having problems?

I think you're due for a carb job. When those carbs get crotchety (the built-in diaphragm that pumps the fuel up from the tank), they sometimes do start/run better when they are nearly full than when they're low.

Even in perfect condition, trying to start a B&S on half a tank isn't gonna happen so, if the pump diaphragm is a bit dodgy you're gonna notice it...

All praise to B&S for their design but, it does have a few holes in it (no pun intended)

:lolgoku: Each to their own, I'd prefer not to deal with them myself. All I was saying is they tried &, in a perfect world, they work well but, we don't live in a perfect world; you also need to consider the second part of that statement

Thanks for the help guys. I will try some work on it or if it pisses me off enough I'll just get a new motor.
