Go kart clutch smoking

but i mean look at the collar of the clutch that goes onto the shaft isnt that to close to the rubber o ring/ gasket thing and also do i still have to use the bolt at the end of the shaft?

You mean the oil seal? As long as it's not rubbing it, it's fine. Forget the bolt at the end of the shaft. Install a lock collar to retain the clutch if it doesn't have it's own set screws.

There is a Briggs & Stratton video that shows a centrifugal clutch's installation. They show the clutch being installed with spacers to hold the clutch in position so they are working in conjunction with clutches the set screw. That video shows a washer & a retaining bolt at the end of the cranshaft-overkill?? It is a small thing & easily done-do it.

i watched a video by briggs and stratton racing on how to install a centrifugal clutch and they said to use some type of radius washer and buckwheat i dont really get what u said there.

You can install a clutch anywhere you want/need on the crankshaft, as long as it's not so close that it's rubbing the crankcase, or so far away that it has less than (imho) 3/8" keyway engagement. That said, closer to the engine is slightly better because of bearing loading. You use washers, spacers, or whatever to locate it in/out on the shaft, and either setscrews, a lock-ring, or a bolt in the end of the crank to secure it - or any combination of the above, as long as it's secure and solid. If you're like me and hate Murphy, then bolt it down as many ways as you can.

Also a good idea to put some anti-sieze on the crankshaft before installing the clutch, it'll make getting it off in a couple of years a LOT easier.

That'd work just fine - and available at your local hardware store. Use just enough washers/spacers to take out the 'slack' between the end of the clutch hub and the crank end, put a bolt in the crank, tighten it down good and snug, and call it good.

So I went to my local hardware store and picked up a couple of 3/4 inside diameter washers. I stuck them onto the shaft and the clutch was tightened down. so while i was watching one of tman's go kart video's he says that a bolt at the end of the shaft and set screws isnt a good idea. is this true?

So my friend came today and sold me a 72t axle sprocket for just 10 dollars! but after just looking around youtube i watched a video on how someone replaced the clutch on a baja warrior with a torque converter and a gear reduction system was bolted onto the engine's 4 bolt pattern around the shaft. i was thinking that if i slide the engine back to its original spot; the photo with the clutch hanging out about 1 inch, and also move the clutch back on the shaft and install 3/4 inch metal plate onto it and buy the azusa jack shaft kit and shorten down the axle to about 3-5 inches and bolt a pillow block to the 3/4 plate coming from the engine. something like in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82AirkKFyo0

Yup- News to me too. I haven't had any issues using the set screws in conjunction with the crank bolt. I guess somebody did. You know how warning labels work... *Warning- do not use this hairdryer in the shower..." ('cuz some idiot electrocuted himself and sued...LOL)

today i finished the gokart up. It was a blast at night! i drove around for about an hour but then later the clutch started to smoke again. i got the 12 clutch and 72 sprocket setup.

If the clutch lasted for an hour before it started smoking, something tells me that the kart was being driven in such a way as to not engage the clutch fully. Sometimes when people who have never ridden a kart ride for the first time, they feather the throttle and ride at lower speeds. This causes the clutch to start slipping and overheat. (Just a thought)

Are you still trying to climb steep hills? This will also finish your clutch off at 6:1 gearing.

If possible, get a 10T clutch and you won’t have any more problems. Guaranteed

Or if they drive with lots of on-throttle, off-throttle action. I had to keep after my daughter when she started driving, it sounded like: "vroom/coast/vroom/coast". That'll KILL a cent clutch.

any suggestions on how i would have to install a jackshaft in this situation? i have limited space as you can see in the photos. im thinking about using the azusa jackshaft kit
