As a new member to this website, I've had the idea of starting a new go kart, (spider kart's "grandaddy"), for this new build, I'll be using a yanmar l70 single-cylinder diesel, with a reverse gearbox. It is all taken apart, because I am trimming the 1in shaft to a 3/4 to fit everything.
I made one last year, from all scrap materials, and worked ok. I've finally made up my mind and decided which to switch to.

I am trying to at least get the materials needed for this new kart by the end of summer. I can't get an actual job yet, so I've been mowing lawns, but even that doesn't do good if pay. I have set up a GoFundMe,( https://gofund.me/bf8dcd91 )
Any help along the way will be great. I already have an engine, CVT torque converter, gearbox, axle, lights, and tires. I have used, and recommend the gearbox, was great for towing trailers, tearing trees down, or just helping someone else out of the mud.

Welcome! And I commend you on the use of a diesel engine. But with the torque that they produce you’ll be better off leaving it a 1” output shaft and stepping up to a 40 series CVT.

:welcome2:
I second Denny, 40 series would take the torque no problem, 30 might be in a bit of question. The 40 series is a bit more flexible in terms of mounting as well.
@Master Hack , I told you young’ns are still around here!

Ok, so instead of taking it to get trimmed to 3/4, I'll just get a keyway, because it's just a threaded shaft. This will help a lot, bring 75$ to a price of $25 maybe...

ok, a lil update on the engine...
this is irritating me, because no one will just put a 1/4 keyway in the shaft, leaving me with the only option to bring it down to a 3/4in shaft with a keyway.
This won't be a problem, except, I will just have to wait to mow this weekend.
I say this won't be a problem because the engine only puts out 12 ft pounds of force. and only a 6.5 hp, the same as my old Briggs and Stratton
6.5, with a 3/4. I thought that the diesel would have been more torque too... :( More torque doesn't come till I get into the bigger size engines, like the l100. Im using a yanmar btw...
Doing this will reduce the cost since I already have it.

A Briggs of the same size only has at best 9 ftlbs of torque. You said the yanmar has 12. 3 ft lbs is quite a jump on these tiny engines plus the diesel hits peak torque at a much lower rpm. You asked about cost to build the grand daddy on another thread. To do it right you will need between $2,500 and $3,000. Depending on how fancy you go with the build.

Karts ain’t cheap. The cheapest kart you can make/restore that has a little upgrade potential and speed, is a live axle yard kart. Even that is $800+ depending on some factors.

@thatkartbuilder, good luck with this build, the fact you built one before tells me you can do it, but it may take some time. Here’s advice—don’t cut corners—make it right, or don’t make it at all. The diesel on this kart interests me a lot, should be a kool build when finished.

Ok, a little update...
Haven't been on a while, on vacation, anyways I've forgotten the idea of a grandaddy kart, and decided to build my own design, similar. I'm working with my dad again this summer. So there's a place we give service to, and have engine skids with 1 1/4in steel tube, they end up scraping it, now I have a few pieces..
