Hi first off well done on buying a welder. I am a codded welder by trade(stick and tig) thought i can M.I.G and gas weld as well. My advice to you is practice practice practice lol you will soon get your eye in with it. With mig welders never reply on the dials all ways go with how it sounds while your doing the weld and what the weld looks like once your finished. You will soon know what i mean when i say this good luck want to see some pictures of some monge welds on here soon

Mig...well with gas anyway should sound like bacon on high heat ( thin stuff anyway...which applies to your machine..find a setting you like the feel and sound of and then adjust your speed and angle to it. Don't keep fine tuning the machine..

I have had my hf 90amp mig for many years. It has paid for itself more than a couple dozen times, in those years. It may be a cheapo, but I treat it like it was a high $$ machine. I use Lincoln wire, been the best for me out of all that I tried. (except one, but I was told it WAS Lincoln under a different supplier name)
In my experience with this machine, you want to hear bacon cooking, as mentioned by Dave. I find that the best setting for the dial is almost 7..... 6 if it's 1/8" thick...... And I stick with that for just about everything. I just do small circles and watch how the wire pushes into the work. I watch to see how the bead is forming and adjust my travel speed accordingly.....

Honestly if finances allow, go for Hobart. I have the 140amp 110v and 190amp 220v, best welders money can buy imo.
You'll have hard time learning how to weld not knowing if you're doing something wrong or the machine. It's ok to use those welders once you learn on something decent and know your stuff.
If you can get gas, get it, well worth it. I didn't really learn how to weld right till I got gas. Makes for a much cleaner, better looking, stronger welds.

how about an update Jarod? are you a welding fool now? once you've got it you'll start looking at everything differently, you look at welds on a bridge rather than the view from it. I've had a ton of success with that welder running Lincoln wire through it.
