I have a small go kart project with a predator 212cc on it. I was thinking of running a small pulley off the other side of the jackshaft to some sort of alternator to generate power to a small light or charge a small battery for a light.

Has anybody ever done something like this before? What would work to generate enough power to power a light while the kart is running?

IIRC....it's been discussed, but it's much easier just to get a small battery and LED lights....they draw so little current that unless you were planning a whole lot of use...it would even be feasible to use disposable batteries, but a trickle charger from HF and a small motorcycle or deer feeder type battery would probably do the trick.

Get one of those Black and Decker 18v batteries from tractor supply or Amazon. It'll run about 5 hours on a charge. Or 2 batteries, a drill and charger kit for $44.99.

i would say that^ is a good idea. comes with a drill? i would rig it as an electric starter too.

Last time i was at harbor freight they had 2 rectangle lights i would say were about 6x2.5 inches for only $15. < i dont know what volts they need for full effect.
Me and myself are rigging up a scooter headlight and a trailer brake light that use a 9 volt battery,

I can't say with any authority....but I would think it would work very well.

Just to ramble slightly off-topic....If you've ever had any experience with an oil lamp....and experienced first hand the light they put out....back in the day, that was all there was....much better than a candle....butttttt......not ...thaaaat much.

Then came kerosene lamps...then Colemans...(burning white gas). For a long time, those were the epitome of "Lightning the night".

Then came propane....(no pumping) ....then ......the revolution: Rechargeable Halogen. The drawback was battery life. Then came LED ....and ion lithium batteries...and all was right in the world.

Yes, it's a truly wonderful thing to be blessed to live in this new technological world....but unless we can solve our overpopulation, overconsumption, and environmentally distructive ways...we are headed for hard times....

I'm no tree hugger....but it's becoming more and more apparent that global warming is fo reals....

Meanwhile....I like my fossil fuel vehicles, flip a switch electricity, and especially all the new technologies that are making us fat and lazy. Oh yeah...(what was I talking about? ).....LED is AWESOME!

The Monetary Powers and Corporate Empire working hand in hand to ensure a need for scarcity and profit. Sufficient resources unevenly distributed leads to struggle, conflict, war....

i've heard of people putting those friction drive dynamo's on the back wheel of their go kart. i have one that produces about 6.5 volts which is enough for a not very bright light. i'm sure you could use 2 if 1 wasn't powerful enough.
