Umm, sorry Paul but, anything is possible with enough time, money & patience... whether it's practical or not is another question; there's a lot of work involved & the engine may not have enough torque to make it work...

I know....but all the effort, money, etc. that it will take is generally a brick wall for 90% of people. It is just not practical considering all the other alternatives

Most if not all dirt bikes have a unitized transmission/motor, sharing the same case.
So essentially yes, but with difficulty.

:iagree: I've been a machinist/machine builder (as well as other things) for over 25 year's; I could probably do the job, but it would require more machines and all the other related tools and knowledge of a full service machine shop to do it right than most hobbiests will have.....

Yep! Never tell a machinist he can't do something!

Don't think I haven't thought using a Harley divorced transmission (like on a Softail) on a kart many times, though! And that would actually be pretty easy to do!

Just use the whole dirtbike engine and gearbox together. Sell the Briggs to pay for engine parts.

If one is set truly on making a trans, a 2 speed dog clutch with a cent clutch could be about the easiest.
I believe it has been done with a few minibikes back in the day. Shifting on the fly will be a bit much as they are kinda by design prone to being damaged.
