gear ratio

I've seen the recommended ratio of 6 :1 seems for gas karts.
i've built a 48volt/1800 watt...cart weighs about 150...rider weighs 200
currently 12 tooth drive gear and 54 tooth on axle..is this within recommended ratio for electric ???

Unless I have missed something, you have not stated the rated RPM of your motor. If you can feed it the proper diet, it will be around 2 1/2 HP, but at what speed?

Some of the DC motors will just keep wrapping themselves up higher and higher, and the watt rating is roughly the limit of how much power drain it can sustain without damage. Has not much to do with speed.

Some electric motors can run at axle speed and provide enough power if good controls are present, but most require some gearing down......Joe

12T to a 54T on the axle?? That is a TERRIBLE gear ratio for you. And with 16" tyres you are even further in the hole.

You yourself mentioned 6:1 is a good starting point, but then you mention that your gear ratio is 4.5:1?? You need to start at 6:1 and go lower, not higher.

For 16" tyres you are at least going to have to gear 7:1 IMO. The kart and rider are 350 as well, so not light either.

So short answer.....no, that gear ratio you have sucks for you. Sorry

Just remember that ratios work pretty much similar for gas and electric

Yup, :iagree: your gonna get better performance if running ~6:1 :thumbsup:
…& ~7:1 if you want more torque :2guns:

Are you sure you have a 12T drive sprocket? :huh:
...most 48V 1,800W motors, that I've seen, come with a 10T :cheers2:
