I have a question on which clutch I should get. I have a 6.5 predator engine, 17inch tires with a 60 (#35)tooth sprocket on the axle. It's a homemade kart, I bought from a friend. When I bought it,it had an old 5 hp engine with a 12 tooth clutch and it just wasn't taking off very fast so I decided to buy a new engine. I put the clutch from the old engine on it and when I tested it the thing smoked like crazy and was red hot. I'm not sure if I have the right gear ratio for the engine. I believe it's a max torque clutch, but it's an old one. Any help would be great!

Welcome to DIYGK! Im no expert but i think you want more like a 72 on your axle. Ideal ratio would be like 6:1..... Im on my phone so its hard to post link. Use search bar for gear ratio calculator. ..... we have one on this forum. Someone with more experience with gear ratios will chime in shortly....

:iagree: 5:1 is a bit steep, even 6:1 is pushing it with 17" tyres. The larger the axle sprocket, the better it'll be.

However, there's always a trade off; you either have good acceleration or a high top speed, you cant have both...

30 series torque converter

I have the same 212cc Predator on 18 inch rear wheels. I use a 30 series comet torque converter (www.bmikarts.com on sale $140) I use a 9 - 60 tooth ratio. Decent acceleration and top speed. Maybe not the best and depending on the chain you use, you might have to have a little different setup (I dont think #35 chain goes down to 9 tooth, so maybe 10 - 66 or 70 tooth), but it's a start?

I'm on a budget so I think ill change the axle sprocket to a 72. Would I be good with a 12 tooth clutch then?
