Gear Ratio Question

Does anyone have an opinion on a 12 tooth clutch sprocket turning a 40 tooth drive sprocket with 8" - 10" tires? Looking for top speed but don't want it to be too slow off the line; should i go with a 60 tooth?

http://www.diygokarts.com/speed-calculator.html play around, remember to double speed you need 4x the HP. What do you have for an engine? Also remember if load is too great(gearing too high) the clutch will burn up.

Its a 5 hp engine. I just wasnt sure it a 3.33:1 ratio (12 teeth to 40 teeth) would burn up the clutch.

you'll be fine with that ratio if you dont have tires any bigger than 10".
