Not as good as the GX. The GC means General Consumer versus the GX series being commercial duty. The GC is cheapened down and has no aftermarket for parts. It uses a split block design where any head work or internal work requires splitting the entire block diagonally. I have been told the OHC is run by a belt that rides in hot oil also which can't be good for the long haul.

That being said i have 2 of these in vertical shaft and they run excellent.

If you are looking to mod it you will have to make all of your parts. I would recommend the GX or even the clone bigtime over the GC though.

I had a GC on my minibike for quite some time. The only drawback is the intake is on the back and the exhaust was on the front.

It's basically Honda's downgrade of the GX. Both good engines though. If price is the problem but you want overhead cam for whatever reason check out these subarus on ebay. They're better quality than the gc and really competitive, if not better than the gx in terms of quality and endurance. http://cgi.ebay.com/Robin-Subaru-Engine-6-HP-Free-Shipping_W0QQitemZ300401840126QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item45f1584ffe#ht_677wt_941
That's the cheapest you will probably ever find a brand new Subaru

Also, in terms of aftermarket I dont know of anybody who makes parts for the gc. There are a few people who make cams, flywheels, heads, valves, headers, intake etc for the scoobie. And there's an endless amount of aftermarket for the gx.

That's a dyno chart of an ex21. The mod was just a header

Yea, i was told by one of the guys that helped in the development of them not to go over 6000 RPM. If you need to go over that for any reason there's an aluminum flywheel for them. PM if you want that guys email address. He has a lot of aftermarket for them.

If you are still considered a GC series Honda for your kart I can say I've witnessed on 3 separate occasions go-kart seats catching fire or visual remains of what they had as a seat. Even when you divert the muffler it is far too close to the wooden back of the seats, sooo scary. :p

I love the way Subaru engines run but have you priced the replacement parts on the engines? It seems absolutely absurd compared to Honda which I thought were fairly steep but not too much for their superior quality. The engine may originally be affordable to purchase but consider when you need a replacement part of any sort how much you will end up paying.

I vote for GX series Honda engines, specifically the GX200.

I had the same problem. I mounted the engine and exhaust was pointing at your head. I did not have any room to move the engine or make exsaust because it was so close.:furious2:

ok i guess my options are the subaru 6.5 or mod my gx160 to over 6.5 horses. any suggestions? how much money would it take to mode my 5.5 to keep up with the clone 6.5s?
thanks

I'm sure with some creativity, one could divert the exhaust. As far as burning seats go, umm... Heat shield? With all that steel in a gokart, surely a heat shield isn't a problem! For safety, I made a firewall on my kids' cart, by welding a sheet of 16ga. to the roll hoop behind the seat. That kart has no exhaust clearance/ proximity problems, I just wanted to ensure my children's safety if anything were to let go. I think the sheet weighs about 4 pounds. No big deal.
