I don't see the problem tbh...

the airvent on all my gas cans is in the spout not the can,

So I suspect.. even if the can itself is regulated and it's illegal to STORE fuel in any other container..

just having a proper spout on the shelf would fix that issue.

Basically you can "update" any spout by gluing in a piece of tube (slightly longer than the spout (protruding maybe 2" into the can) and I'd say with 1/2" ID you'd be fine ...
As long as you pour slowly that's more than enough to prevent it from spilling.

You can also make yourself a vent...
drill a hole in the far end of the handle, then thread a short bolt in..

want to fill the car/kart/bike... open the can, install the spout, remove the bolt.. and off you go.

Your laws over there must be more lax than here...

In Australia, it's against the law (large fines apply) for filling a non approved container with fuel... which is the main reason I didn't comment until now, we don't have much choice what we use, we use what we're told to, which is what's on store shelves...

WE have the same laws here. But it is not like there is a cop at every gas station. and if the clerk (not like they are rocket scientists) is not paying attention. In a Pinch you might get away with doing something as Stupid as Hellion suggested.

As sid suggested, an easy way to add a vent is drill a 1/2" hole in the top of the handle. Insert a rubber tire filler valve with the core removed. then use the cap of the filler valve to open and close the vent.

Hey now, we can all agree that it's FR who has used milk jugs enough to know that they somehow sour the gas or give it a funny color. I'm just wondering why that happens if they're made out of common polyethylene...

In an emergency I will use whatever I can find to put gasoline in.

I used a couple quart size glass juice bottles till I bought a 2 gallon. Wanted to test the kart but didn't

have a gas can here. Have 6 or so back at my other house 360 miles away. 5 are the older cans with

rear vent. Guess they are worth money now.

Also there is a easy gas vent using a shrader valve for tires. Drill a hole remove valve. Use a piece of

wire to guide valve stem to hole. Pull through with pliers and use the screw cap to close.

There's also another way. Tools you'll need:

Jerry can of choice
1/4" Drill Bit
1/4" Eye Screw

Directions:

1: Drill t'hole just under handle at rear of jug/tank
2: Get t' screw
3: Screw t'screw in until it's screwy screwiness can't be screwed no more
4: Remove vent screw when filling external tank/storage container
5: Repeat step #3 during storage or when you think grandma's bonfire is big enough...

BBQ Joe told me about the valve stem trick. I like his other solution better just use a water jug.
Identical to a gas jug just not color coded. HMMM.
But... probably NOT "Approved for motor fuel use", and illegal to fill at the gas station. But like I said before most gas station attendants are not exactly "Rocket Scientists".

All of my gas cans now have a rubber tire stem with the internals removed.
Even though all the threads are different for the spout cap, the spout itself works on all of them. So I took one spout, removed most of the junk, and plastic welded it in the open position.

Protip: Your average hot glue, for some reason, will not hold up to gasoline.
