Doug Honey.. I ran a watercooled 80cc 10hp two stroke (Honda) with a cardboard (original cereal pack) head gasket for well over a year..
it was meant as a temp fix (for me to drive and get the actual gasket)
then rain kicked in when I arrived back home...
and being a teenager after a few more weeks of "..not today.. tomorrow!"
I decided to replace that as soon as it fails instead.
it didn't.. I actually sold the moped before it did (with the new gasket still in it's bag)

So yeah.. cardboard may not be the best gasket-replacement ever... but it's not a myth either as far as I can tell.

REALLY....That's not the point sid...heck...cardboard and tin foil probably makes a pretty gopd head gasket....but we're talking about side gaskets here....and whether RTV is up to the job....and dam net ....it is...and a heel of a lot easier that making a POS cardboard gasket!

Just ignore both of these guys ..it took BOTH of them twelve years to learn the alphabet....they only got graduated out of high school because they were pains in the rear!!!!

instead of the rtv, The ultra gray is much better. when a job comes in, an I see blue or red squeeze gaskets im on alert for other crude repair on that engine. i love it when i get junk phone calls for my student loans. my ninth grade books are due? like from 1986? i guarantee i never took them home! Proud to be a drop out....

A card board gasket wrapped with foil sounds like a great idea, an some high tack spray!

Soooooo. I can use a precut (ordered) gasket, I can buy gasket material and make my own, I can use a cereal box and cut my own, I can use RTV, I can use ultra gray.

I'll let you know how Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum works.

I don't get paid $96 an hour for poor boy repairs, I solve problems and customer base! I have nothing to prove here! All I ever do is try n help. I like this site for the Sarcasim,but often confused about the age and real experience of ppl here! If you need to challenge my technical talent,just start me a new clean post. other than that, why eat so much pop-corn? give ya the ****s

I wouldn't try the chewing gum...but I'm surprised you were even listening!!!!

I appreciate your help and thanks for sharing your experience with me.

I'm in my mid 30's, have little to no experience with Gaskets and enjoy long walks on the beach. I also enjoy the sarcasm.

I will return the RTV and get Ultra Gray.

Rtv instead of gaskets or on gaskets is for butchers, period. If you can not make a gasket with 2 good surfaces seal up with just a gasket you don't need to be working on stuff. Yes there are places on car engines that just use rtv and it is fine to use there because it was designed that way. Cereal boxes, manila envelopes do make very good gasket material.

Head gasket surface is not perfect. Some scratches that I can feel with a finger nail.
What's best option besides milling?

Remember MLS gasket on aluminum.

Sandpaper the surface? 80, 120, 180, 220?
Try copper spray even though most say not to use with MLS.
Order a different copper gasket and use copper spray?
????

Called about getting it milled. Nobody wanted to do it. I may try using some glue to attach sandpaper to a piece of glass and run the head's gasket surface over it.

about 10 min he uses the glass.

My Dad once had me push/pull the cylinder head of an old Datsun (aging myself) across some #400 wet/dry sandpaper glued to a full length mirror (which was laying on a table of course) for several hours. Good times.
