Hi all, can lets say, a 1/2 or 3/4 horse electric garage door opener motor be converted to DC for a project I'm working on...I want to power it with a 12V deep cycle battery ? I am also wondering if I were to use a electric twist throttle how fast those motors can propell you when used in this type of application ? Any Ideas would be very cool...Actual 12V motors are way too expensive for a 3 wheeled beer cooler...Thanks

with any motor it depends on the rpm of the motor and the gear ratio your drive components are. A 12v battery with a power inverter will not do you any good because the 120v motor will damage the inverter and drain your battery.
There would be too much of a current draw.

you should find some wheelchair motors they'll work better.

If you are not going to be riding on it you can find some powerwheels to tear apart on craigslist those motors will work for a cooler!:cheers2:

12V will not get you far. 1/2 of a HP is about 350W. That's... very low in the scooter world.

I would advise against the use of a garage door opener motor, pretty much all the ones I've seen are AC induction motors and not really that practical for using in a motorized vehicle.

Yeah I'm figuring that out....I'm looking at a couple "manta" motors on ebay but the bidding is starting to skyrocket...Besides it maybe way more power than I want...If I get one I may have to figure out how to wire the throttle so it cant be opened up completely or somebody will do a wheelie to theyre death LOL !

If you want, I can link you to go a guy who'se selling 750 watt motors for $35.99 + $10 shipping.

AFTER I buy 3 of them myself :D

Retail is $79.99 + a good $20 in shipping, and he's offering discounts in shipping (2.95 for each other motor )

Starter Motor

You could alway try a used starter motor. We built a
Electric Bar stool racer with a 12 volt starter motor out of
a 1998 Dodge Caravan. It went like Stink:idea2:

Find a "mini flywheel" with the same type of teeth, bolt it as the "sprocket" to the wheel, mount the starter, BAM! Done.
