Garage Clean-up Part 2

Before you ask, part 1 was actually cleaning the garage, which took place 2 weeks ago; it took two of us 12 hours to sort the trash from the treasure & generally clean up the mess. We removed over 100kgs of scrap metal, a large box of timber & 3 large bags of general waste...

Now I'm on to phase 2: storage solutions.

After weeks of searching, I finally found some reasonably priced, used pallet racking the correct size for the job. It's a bit rusty but, with a little work & a quick paint job, it'll do the job...

Why pallet racking? Because it's the only thing I could find that was big enough to cover the space it's going into. I know, it's a bit overkill but, it'll definitely do the job...

The bracing pieces will all have to be cut &/or redrilled to work as I'm making the shelves narrower than standard (I've already sourced new shelving, which wasn't included in the framework purchase)

The past week has been all work & no play for me... well, sort of, I spent most days driving to pick up new machines & parts for other projects, not to mention the horrible weather we're having...

I did manage to get one upright frame completed though...

At this rate, this is gonna take a while...

No, they are not...

Around here, a good price for 9' rails is around $25; end frames start at around $60. So, for a 2 bay setup with 2 shelves per bay is around $400 (round figures) plus the shelf material...

Oh, BTW, those prices are for used items

So far, this lot owes me a little over $200 & a few hours work, including the shelves & paint...

It looks like you could do with some more cleaning in your garage. It is packed!! LOL

It's real cheap when work is trying to ditch it

They get u to pull it down then tell u to "make it not be here"
It's stupid what they sell it for
Being as what u have is unregistered and is really only worth it's weight in scrap
If work safe found u using this in a buisness or company then u get a hefty fine

If u wanna make it narrower

U just shorten the horizontal peices my redrilling

Then put the diagonals at a steeper angle

But looks like u worked that out

I rekon u don't wanna try to shorten the orange bits

They never regain their strength

Unless u well over do them

Also they make good work benches

Workplace health & safety is really strict over here, they don't like paying for stupid, avoidable mistakes

A buddy of mine had a 6m long bench made of the stuff with a solid 1/2" steel plate for a top...

when u have an industrial boom like us over the last 2 decades
u get alot of people who wanna cash in
quite a few are very inexpeianced or lack common sense
or they just willingly perform shoddly work to get even more profit

and thanks to lawyers and corperate bull**** u cant fire anyone for being a dumb ***

so u gotta make stupid saftey rules to protect these people
otherwise they will inevitably hurt them selves and thanks to the US the only course of action is to sue the company

all weather conditions
gloves must be carryed on u at all times
some places u must wear them at all times
saftey glasses must be worn at all times
bump caps must be worn at all times

any height above 0.5 mts off the ground requires the use of a harness and fall restraint device
or full edge protection (hand rails)

u must fill out a take 5(tick and flick book) before any task
u need a tiket for
overhead crane
mobile crane
forklift
sissor/boom lift
working at heights
working in a confined space

if u perform a lift above 2 tonne or longer than 1.8mts u must do a jsa with requires the signature of both supivisor and leading hand as well as all on the job (takes 1/2 an hour)

if u want to perform hot work (welding oxy cutting)
then u must file a hot works permit to your supervisor and he will reveiw it

its getting out of control

LMFAO yup WIMAS is just as bad in Canada plus you have to have all the appropriate licences to drive those forklifts

I can see the permits for any heavy machinery, forklifts and lifts as well. Most of the other stuff is a bit over kill though, especially the heights thing. Come one, a harness after being a foot and a half above the ground?

The weather over the last few weeks has been a bit hit & miss so, between that & "other distractions", I've made some progress; the pile is getting smaller but, there's still a pile...

I've finished all three frames & I half painted 4 of the rails today; weather permitting, I'll get them finished tomorrow...

If you look closely at the pics, you get an idea of just how bad the rust was... not that it's a problem, I don't intend to be putting that much weight on them...

So, the weather held out & last Sunday, with the help of my buddy, Kurt, We assembled the framework. Today I trimmed the shelving & fitted 2 shelves (one in each bay); the lower of the two (on the left) holds all the pocket bikes & part as well as my growing collection of engines. The other holds most of the contents of the shelving that used to be in the corner (as seen in pic 1).

However, as you can see in pic 4, it hasn't put much of a dent in the mess yet...

Those shelves look great. They hold a surprising amount of stuff. Just not enough apparently
