Funny noise

Have an interesting noise coming from the briggs and stratton that came with a two seater I recently purchased. Engine does not currently run but does turn over. When rolling the go kart after about five feet I get almost a motorcycle sound like something is rubbing. Any idea what that might be? Same noise can be heard after pulling the starter string. Engine will turn over then make the rubbing sound.

No spark so ordered a new plug and it has a new carb I just put on.

Almost sounds like a tire is rubbing against the frame somewhere if it's making a sound like that.

Nah its definitely not that, could be clutch related though. Next thing I’ll do is pop the clutch off and see if it still does it after.

All good questions and not sure how to begin to troubleshoot that kinda stuff. Open to suggestions.

Improper valve lash? But that usually has a sewing machine sound to it...hmmm if we could get audio of it that could help us out a bit more.

After Brians suggestion about the coil rubbing the flywheel I’m leaning towards that being the issue given it does it when I pull the starter and also when its rolling. I’ll pop the cover off and check the gap (thanks youtube) when I get the new plug delivered.

It's not the Briggs flywheel nut making funny noise is it? Sometimes they need to be taken apart and cleaned and lubed. I can never remember the proper name for that thing...

I actually missed the part of it happening while the kart is being pushed also. I'm now leaning towards the bushing in the clutch being dry, it does need a drop or 2 of oil before every ride and every once in a while as you're using the kart. Try that quick and see what happens.

The other thing is it could actually be the brake dragging or a bad bearing on the kart itself, while pulling the motor over you'd be rocking the kart as well....

If you get to a point of remove the motor from the kart, then you'll isolate if it's coming from the kart or the motor and will be able to identify the problem area more accurately!

JT is like out resident Briggs expert! Very impressive how much he learned in a short time! He must be pretty busy these days as I haven't seen him about much lately.

Well pushing the kart shouldn't turn the engine over at all with a centrifugal clutch on it and since it makes the same noise when you pull the pull cord to turn the engine over isolates it down to the clutch housing. Check to make sure the nut is tight on the clutch housing and inspect the clearance between clutch shoes and the housing. It might be dented, out of round or have something loose inside. It's the only thing that makes since to me. That's what I would check first.

I poke fun at JT sometimes because he gets annoying at times as we all can be I guess. But I do like the guy. I hope he is doing well.

OP. I hope you find your noise. Chances are it's not a real big deal. If it was it would be doing annoying things to you...or it will start soon enough. I have faith you'll find it though. Keep looking and listening.

Yeah makes sense, I’ll pull that clutch off then see if it still makes that noise. That’ll be an easy check. No telling how bad off that clutch really is.

Is that what it would sound like if the coil is rubbing the flywheel as suggested above?

I’ll pop the clutch off and pull the starter rope to see if it still happens.

Quick update: pulled the starter cord with the clutch off and no noise so I’ll order a new clutch.

Thanks, yeah its nice to see it running now. Who knows how long its been since it last ran.

Now I gotta figure out the white smoke thing while the clutch gets delivered. May be just some old gas I guess.
