WHY IS IT SO FREAKIN' COMPLICATED?!!!

What an unbelievable cluster f' that arrangement is. My brother stopped by to install the new engine parts (carb, throttle linkage, air cleaner) on our Manco Phoenix kart today. It was hours and hours of total frustration that ended with a bloody hand when my brother saw it fit to punch the Briggs flathead.

I couldn't help because I was recently hobbled by a minibike incident (http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=8621).

I have no idea where to go with it. There doesn't seem to be a combination of springs, rods, gears and cams that would allow the thing to operate properly. Brackets bash into other brackets and the stupid thing binds up.

We finally took all springs and rods off of the assembly, covered it with a garbage bag and pushed it back into its corner of the driveway.

I was hoping to have the thing ready for when I see my kids tomorrow, but that ain't gonna happen.

Grrrr.....

I understand how it's supposed to work. As engine speed increases, the authority of the governoer to close the throttle gets stronger. It's job is to regulate engine speed at various loads. As load drops, engine RPM increases, and the governer rod puts more tension on the throttle spring and begins closing the throttle to prevent engine overspeed.

It's just a matter of getting the various springs, levers and rods in the right place in order to make it all that happen.

Good - you can fix it then :p

I'm hobbled for the next month, according to the doctor.

It isn't.
You are just unfamiliar with the correct procedure. Get the Fun Power manual. To do anything else is guesswork.
Before disassembly, drawings/pics should be made/taken.
Even the best mechanics on the planet use reference materials.
My own builds are documented down to the last washer.
100 hundred years from now...I will be able to duplicate my work...as will any body else.

The only problem is, once we pulled the tank off the block, the springs and rods came apart on us before we could reference anything. I'll look for the manual.

Okay! My brother (Hellonwheels) got it sorted out. Turns out that we had bent the tank bracket so badly that the linkage was all jammed up. I'm gonna take his word for it, but it looks like it's working okay. The problem now is that the TC setup isn't working right.

Both pullies are pretty rusty and may be the culprit. The governor is cutting back the throttle and not allowing the cart to go up hills or go more than 5 MPH. RPMs are high, but it's just not moving. You can see the governor trim the throttle. If I work the throttle manually the thing goes like stink (will even chirp the tires).

The belt on the TC is beat up, too. I've ordered a new one.

I'll search to find Comet TC maintenance procedures. In the meantime, my brother is bringing over a brand new GTC TC setup to try.

Will post results later.

It seems like we're getting enough RPM but not enough speed. I tend to think it might be the torque converter not doing it's job 100 percent.

The governor seems like it's acting as it should. When you start from a dead stop, the throttle goes wide open and it takes off. As load decreases, engine speed increases. At this point the governer starts to close the throttle. I heard my brother come down the street with it and it sounded like he should have been really moving but he drove by only doing like 10MPH, lol.

I think the converter is okay. The real test will be when the new 6.5HP clone engine arrives. It shipped yesterday :)
