Full suspension kart, steering gearbox?

Hello,
As i mentioned in a few other threads, im building a full suspension kart, And i want to know if i can use a Steering gearbox from a car on my kart, has anyone of you ever done this? I wanna buy a Car steering gearbox because you can get them for cheap and you can get parts for it.

Yes, i do have a welder, a MIG one

Yes, the rack and pinion box is a good idea, but you can't get one of those here in germany, i want to go to the junkyard to find one or maybe order one from a Trabant 601 on E-bay: The Trabant 601 is a 2 stroke car that was built in the GDR (German Democratic Republik), Its a "small" car, so the Steering gearbox won't be too heavy or big.
