Free tachometer for phone or laptop/pc

I used this program to find the max rpm my two cycle was putting out. I do have a cable driven tach but have not yet found a replacement cable yet (old snowmobile one). The program can be adjusted to read single or multi cylinder 2 or 4 strokes as long as you know how many bangs/exhaust openings per rev.
download the program here http://www.tunelab-world.com/rpmsound.html enjoy!!

Though this is the right place for a "tool"

Now that's interesting! I recently bought an optical tach- You stick a piece of reflective tape to what you're measuring, like the flywheel, point the gizmo at it and read the RPM. Now I'm very tempted to drag my laptop outside and do a comparo!
Thanks for the cool tip!

dig up some better quality videos online where they show an car/engine on a dyno with a good shot of the tach. Set the program for that upper engine range, set proper cylinder ratio and watch the results. So far I've been very close

i downloaded the program, and all it seems to read is my computer's speed. then i loaded the sidewinder video to see if it would increase in rpm, not really. i tweaked the max rpm to 7500, which is probably still low for the gs500f. i also enabled cal control, nothing different. the tach would read it's low of 800, to 1700 on the specs of 0.5 times fundamental, @500Hz. do i have it setup right?

.5 is for 4 strokes single piston. The cal is really not needed as it requires a tuning fork to function. I suspect the record device of you pc.
For videos it works best to select the soundcards/pc's output as an input. Its like taking a wire and jumping the output right back into the mic input hole except done internally. For this to be done (win xp) find the speaker/volume control icon in bottom right hand corner. Right click on the icon which brings up the option for "volume control " thats the one we want. Then in volume control goto the top menu: options: properties. Recording. There should be some options boxes. You want something such as mono/stero mixer or output. Then click ok. This will bring up something that looks familiar to the volume control but it the recording control. This is where you will select the mixer or output and the level it "listens" at. You can keep this window open as you experiment with the rpm sound program.
If further help is needed just pm me

The MAX and MIN rpm is just like fine tunning the listening window for the expected rpm. For my two strokes to give an accurate reading I had the min set to 7500rpm and max of 8800rpm at 1.0x and when no sound was sampled it did show 7500ish rpm but thats because its waiting for the sound cycles to enter the specified listening window. The narrower the window the more accurate.
