Hey everyone Im new to this forum, and think its great for newbie karters. Well this is my situation, I have 2 motors sitting in my garage from another prject that I lost interest in. One is a 2005 GS650 from a street bike, and the other a Honda CRF 450 motor. Ide like to build a frame from scratch as I am a full time welder/Fabricator and would give me a project to do for the remainder of the winter monthes. The problem I am having is I cant find and plans or good pictures for that matter to get some ideas from. Does anyone know where I could get some frame ideas? I plan on using 1"x1" square and round tubing, I can have my bends done at work for no cost so thats not really an issue. I know I could buy a used Kart frame but that wouldnt be a challenge! Thanks in advance for any help

Hey,

Sounds like you have a good idea on what you need to do. However, I would recommend using more than 1" square and round tubing. For instance, on my kart I am using 40mmx40mmx2.0 for the main frames. That is a bit over 1 1/2" square, with 5/64" wall thickness.
I am using a GS500 engine, which doesn't have nearly as much power as a GS650 engine, so... it wouldn't be a bad idea to use a bit larger diameter tubing.
You CAN use the 1" square, it just means that it will end up heavier because of the additional crossbracing and wall thickness which is required, as well as not being quite as strong.

I bought plans from http://www.edge.au.com for the "Sidewinder Plus", which would work well with that CRF450 engine, but you can just look at the pictures for ideas if you like. I found the plans very easy to follow, and most parts easy to fabricate. You should have no trouble because of your previous welding/fabricating experience.

Good luck!

Modelengineer...Your right about the bigger tubing and thicker wall, I think I am going to stick to 1" tho my shop isnt set up for bigger then that, plus its easier to work with I dont mind adding aliitle cross bracing. I didnt know the 650 had that much more power over the 600 my buddy from work has the engine now, hes cleaning up the ports matching then to the manifold stuff like that.

Dpaxson...I want to build a street cart, it would strickly be for streets, parking lots, a dirt oval we have here in town for motorcycles, and an ice oval we have on the Welland canal for motorcycles in the winter...That would be one of my projects is studding a set of kart tires. I kinda like racing kart frames, but would like to build a sleek exotic frame if possible. Im gonna sketch something up when I get time and put it on here to give you an idea of what Im looking for.

Modelengineer...The sidewainder plus is awesome that looks like something I started to build when I was 15 but had to sell my finished frame the same week it was finished because I ran out of money. Ive always wanted to build something like in this pic with a scraped atv, perhaps a raptor 660. But my interest is in a street kart with balls.

ya it's totally over engineered for the engine but put a 600cc sportbike engine in there and i bet you could tear apart almost any sports car you wanted to. it has to weigh less than 1000lbs.
