i am thinking to employ 4 wheel steering system instead of conventional rack and pinion or wagon steering system.. what are the pros and cons of this system and how does it work??

I'd google it
And read up on a few pages

From my limited knowledge
They run a computer controlled system to turn the wheels inrelation to the fronts
The back wheels turn only very slightly in relation to the front though

Unless u are talking rock climber, monster truck type where u get full steering on both axles
This it done via hydraulics
There is no connection between driver and wheels
They run something called a HMU with is what the wheels turn
The HMU then operates a steering control valve
Which inturn runs cylinders on the axles
Usually the driver can chose to steer front rear or both axles
This system is used in earth moving gear and agriculture

It's made for low speed manouvers in tight places

Rear wheel steering can make the vehicals unstable
Just ask any fork lift driver
This is why cars are front steer

Last problem with rear steer is power transmission
U must get the axle to bent
Ie use cv joints or uni joints
This can get costly

Edit

Unless u instal a diff it will likely hinder u more than help

IMHO, any 4WS system will be a major operation/headache to design &/or set up on a go kart, there's just WAY too much engineering involved but, each to their own...

i have seen cars making 4ws.. their turn radius is very low.. the dont use hydraulics necessarily and can work mechanically ttoo.. they work using bevel gears...

it is possible of course, but is it a good idea?
I doubt that!
First it'll be an expensive task to fullfill given the budget you set ($900 for the whole electric kart... that is the kart we're talking about, right?)
Second it'll add a lot of weight, ending in a lower range at lower speeds etc.

And this is serious engineering you're dealing with, any miscalculation will make it a pain to drive the kart...

:iagree: Too much design/calculation and work for a kart. $900 isn'tgonna get you far. And lastly, I dont think its gonna help a kart in handling, moreover, I think it would hinder it. Monster trucks use it because of their weight to hp ratio, suspension set up, and because of their high @§$ center of gravity. With only front steer, some of their maneuvers would be impossiblewithout flipping the truck. As stated earlier, ag machines use it to aid in TIGHT maneuvers because they are also so BIG.
If you just HAD TO HAVE IT,I think I would try the gears out of a big angle grinder. I suppose you could set it up to mechanically turn the rear with a rod and linkage connected to the front. I can see it in my head.... but then you need to fab up a rear end with cv joints and turning spindles.....
And when your front tires turn and point left, your rears should turn n point RIGHT... in case you didn't know.....
Just not worth the time and money in my opinion. Would be cool though......;):cornut:

I have to agree w/ everyone... 'even' from my /slanted/ POV, 4wheel steering is only good for climbers n ofcourse construction equipment... (hence 'slow'!)

The mathematical symmetry needed to pull it off n 'actually' be better than conventional RnP was tried/failed for major manufacturers just cause of the cost n "profitability" was hindered cause it was 'unstable' at higher rates of speed(dependant on the weight/conditions).

"IF" you plan on such an undertaking, I wish u luck and want pics. ONLY 'possible' advantage to 4 wheel steer is Jeeps 0degree design...

AWESOME for climbing uneven terrain at low speeds... not so good for a little, low, light cart... make sure you get a set of these tire things...LMAO... NOTHING will stop you then... except pavement...

we are planning to make a 4ws with 2 rack n pinion..one at front and rear each connected by bevel gear with variable teeth on either side.this will help me manage the turning angle of the rear wheel with respect to the front thus controlling turn radius without unstability
