yes it needs the pistons. It also looks to be missing the whole top end, carbs, etc.

The whole bore could be scratched up and need to be rebored and will probably be more work than it's worth, IMO.

my friend got ripped off in a trade... traded a honda trx90 for a honda xr100.... he made the trade too quick... turns out it needs to be completely rebuilt on the top end! gas in the oil, oil in the combustion chamber. it smokes, low compression, what a nightmare. honda said it would cost around 800 to fix.

be careful on things like this. what about a lifan 125? theyre like 300-400 new.

Whats with all this china crap? For under 200 dollars have a machine shop bore it over and get an oversized piston and rings to match. 2 stroke bikes are soooo easy to replace the top end. I can do it in a half an hour.

Dont mix 2 and 4 strokes up. A top end on a 2 stroke dirtbike is cheap and easy. A 4 stroke ohc is way harder.

You can't simply bore one of these motors out and slap in a new piston. The cylinders are usually lined with Nikasil or hard chrome, both of which are very costly to get re-done. Most people just buy a brand new jug and piston as a set if the cylinder is badly damaged.

Plus, a KX60 isn't particularly a good kart engine choice. The smaller two strokes have a light switch powerband, either on or off. Even a KX80 is really only powerful when pulling a smaller rider and the bike. A larger rider and heavy kart would be too much for it.

Unless you're prepared to do a lot of wrenching, don't buy it. Don't lose sight of the fact that you aready have a lot on your plate with regards to adapting a bike engine to your kart. Plenty of headscratching, measuring, welding, fabricating, re-measuring, hacking apart and re-fabricating, tinkering, and troubleshooting ahead of you already. Do you really want to add engine problems to the list?

Be patient, and wait for a good deal on a running engine to come along. Heck- I recently was shopping for a chassis, and got a running 140cc pitbike engine in the deal. You never know what you'll find!
