Hey guys

I've got a 1988 Ford Telstar (626 with ford badges) with the Mazda F2 2.2L engine in it. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve on it however seems to be for a different model as it has an electronic thing (solenoid or sensor? not sure.) on the end of it and the cable for it is just dangling there with nothing to plug into. So, does anyone know if the F2 from 88 came with an electronic EGR or does mine have the wrong one on it

Anyone got any ideas where it should be plugged into or if it is even the right one? lol

Also does anyone know what the little box on the block behind the alternator is? Mine has its cable cut off and yet again no other half of the cable to be seen.

Thanks yet again

Looks like a guage sender, do any of the lights on your dash cluster either light up or not light up?

Not sure you should worry about the EGR valve, the engine should function correctly without it as long as there is no vaccum leaks.

I haven't driven the car personally (Still on my learners permit), but my dad told me that the engine light would come on every now and then but it's been a few years since he last drove it and he doesn't remember how often it came up.

When I start it no warning lights come up but as I said, it hasn't left the garage since I started fixing it up, so a light might come on when it heats up more.

Also its got a heap of tappet noise, it sounds a bit like a diesel. Could the EGR not working maybe contribute to it. I was reading that it causes the engine to run a bit cooler. Affecting oil flow maybe?

It would run rough if there was a vacuum leak right? Its pretty smooth apart from the tapping noise hahaha

Thanks

Ahh no it willl only idle rough if there is a vaccum leak, and lean out at high revs but you wont notice it.

Yeah maybe its a battery indicator sender, those annoy the crap outta ya, i usually remove the bulb behind the dash cluster.

No basically the egr just opens up a line of ports that take off the exhaust ports and lead into the intake manifold in the base of the carburettor using a small diaphram valve called the EGR valve, exhaust gas recirculation valve, and its activated by vaccum from the intake manifold usually, meaning the wires are just a sender to tell something whats happening,

In the case of a mitsubishi the ports clog up something terrible and cause the engine to run a bit shoddy, so you usually plug the ports with cork and remove the EGR if you have the head off

Hope it helps, as for the diesel sound - how many miles has it got on it? resetting the tappets is an easy task if you have the tools, and if the are worn then buying new ones usually isn't too bad!

Talk tomorro - too tired now, catchyer!

Jeez must have been late over there. I add 2 or 3 hours to eastern aussie time right? hahah

I'll have to get it running for a while and see if any lights come up. I can just look at the egr when its running to see if it's still working then?

I think its got 168,000 K's or so...around 104,000 miles according to an online converter hahaha.

The engine however only has around 60,000k's or so on it cause the original one carked it and was replaced with an imported one. Probably why so much stuff is set up wrong.

Dad got one of his friends who's an ex mechanic to come around and have a look. He said it sounds like a stuck hydraulic lifter. Sounds exactly like this

Already asked the guy in the vid if hes fixed it and what caused it but no reply.

Thanks
