flywheel mutilation

i have took off my fly wheel and cut off everthing that is in the way of the modifications i am doing.and on the back it says "changing flywheel in any way may increase burst hazard.now,i am sitting like 5 inches away from the flywheel,and i really dont feel like having to remove alluminum shrapnel outta my a**.so is it smart to even go ahead and see if it might burst or should i not even mess with it?

what part did you cut? plastic? or the actual flywheel?

if this is a pocket bike or weed wacker type engine i wouldnt worry about it

Just make a 1/8-1/4in box around it... Maybe make it all fancy and make it rounded out towards the ground... so it would direct any bits into the ground... and then mount a high speed camera to record all the action!

Im confused? What are you doing, or trying to accomplish?

I had to grind the tabs off my flywheel that held the clips for the recoil. I am sure that you will be fine.

If you look at my pics, you will see the before and after of what I did

i sort of did the same thing you did,but i used a small metal saw and all the fins are uneven and sharp.i actually cut myself when i caught it when it fell of the garage shelf.

There is a big difference between what Landuse did, and what you did. Given the high RPM of such a two-stroke, this has the potential to seriously screw with the dynamic balance. I for one would NOT suggest even trying to use that flywheel. It could NEVER fail, or it could blow the spit out of itself- is it worth the risk? I think not.

Matman, I could maybe suggest that you try and even up the fins by trying to make it more balanced. IE. If one fin is gone on the one side, then remove the opposite fin on the wheel. This will still keep it relatively balanced, but you are still going to have a problem with vibration etc cause by the flywheel not being balanced overall.

Go to a mower repair shop, or junkyard and see if you can get a replacement flywheel. If yours is as bad as you say it is, I would probably not use it myself.

If you do decide to use it, do what BM800 says and make a guard for it so that if there is a failure, at least you will be OK

I think ill just go to my local scrap/auto salvage yard and find one that fits.i dont feel like makin a gaurd for it.i dont think i have thick enough metal to protect me from billet aluminum being spun from high rpms.
