the edge style buggies are growing on me! mainly the taipan. i bet it would be simple to just do the whole thing in my 1 1/4'' square tubing and slap on that 16hp industrial with a comet 40. probably would feel right nice.

update: i am modeling my fram and about to buy all parts. My dad had some tires off our old atv with 90% tread...they are huge tho, 27" tall 10"wide with a 10" rim on back and 12" rim on front. They are vampire tires. i was messing around with gear ratio calculations and it looks like if i gear it with a top speed of 50 my theoretical 0-60 time would be 11 seconds with the 16hp motor @3600 rpms. I dont know if i want to remove governer or not yet. does this sound like a good amount of power still?
Now the issue is steering. since im designing i could account for this now. but as far as shear physics go, the rear solid axle will not be so much fun with those bad boys on. i could sell the tires and look for something smaller. i dont know!!!

update:i have all parts recieved with the exception of steering column, tie rods, throttle cable, sprockets, springs for pedals, and torque converter belt. also got a scrap pass from my work and got front suspension/spindle/hub assembly from a golf car, rear leaf springs (idk how to make that work yet) and two full sets of tires and wheels! so now i have a full set of 27s a full set of 20s and a full set of 18.5s. thinking of using 20s in back and 18.5s in front.

haha they probably are. a current update is that i have recieved ALL parts except two shocks and weldment brackets and i am about halfway done modeling them in CAD. my work gave me a complete steering system from a golf car from the steering wheel all the way to the rack and pinion and struts and a-arms. I love my job! haha. im just hoping this thing can turn due to the solid axle. but im not too worried about it because my rear tires are only 2 inches bigger than the fronts. :) pics will be soon upcoming!

I had a question for you guys, I'm doing a rear trailing arm suspension and was looking at shocks. If I want two shocks and my kart weights around 450lbs what are the best ones I can get for a budget of about 50 per shock max? Bmi has a few that are either 400lbs load or 700 lbs load rated. Any thoughts?

If you are doing off-road, the live axle will not be that noticeable. On asphalt, it will s*ck! Looking forward to some pics. Look around the forum for other builders trailing arm suspensions and see what they're using. If it works for someone else, it'll work for you.

okay pictures will be coming tonight. I have the rolling chassis ready but the shocks in the back are definitely not strong enough. you can bottoming out just by standing in it. those are the really cheap shocks you can buy for 15 dollars a piece. I need way stronger shocks that are 12 inches eye to eye if possible. any suggestions???

this is how it sits right now, testing this weekend then disassemble, weld up the roll cage and paint. the heavier duty shocks are coming tomorrow via fed ex

i will be redoing the rear with a dif and leaf springs if its bad, hopefully it will do ok. yea i have all my plans on a full engineering plan in inventor with all models of parts, sub assemblies ,master models, and drawings if you ever want any schematics. being an engineer really helps all this:) also have financial summaries and bill of materials.

i also have been running FEA's of the frame under various loadings. the designs factor of safety is 2.4!
