Got a 16 hp Kohler motor from a piece of equipment. Hunted for and found a good chasis. Got a Northern tool tomberlin firfox. the cart was complete minus the driver clutch and a belt, along with some spare new TC parts, Driven pullies, Driver pullies, and backing plates. Picked it all up for 240.00. The kart was in poor cosmetic shape due to being left out in the elements, paint was shot quite a few surface rust spots, one spot where the tubing split from rusting out, the split is about 2 inches long. the day I got home with it I completly tore it down in about 2 1/2 hrs. I removed the 6 hp and just placed the 16 on the mount, and started looking at what I need to cut out to make it fit. The paint stripping is the suck part, very time consuming. so here are some pictures, will keep posted.

That's not your first weld, isn't it? Those welds look great (can they get any better? lol) Nice job!
Can't wait to see more!

Not my first welds, but I dont consider myself a great welder by any means. some of my welds turn out great, some look like crap, I am not consistant. Those wer OK I would say. Well I got the plate slotted out for the motor adjustment with a plasma cutter, temporarily put the swing arm on the frame to check clearences. I think I need to get the TC before going any further. There is not much clearence from the shaft to the shock, I may end up having to extend the swing arm. Here are some pictures from today.

With the current set-up, I think it would be difficult to get the TC hooked up to the sprocket, let alone clearences with the shock. (might be the camera angle)

I agree to get the TC before moving forward, or else you might be undoing most of what you already completed.

I concur.

I also think wheelie bars might be in order! That's going to be a bit nuts. Don't be too surprised if you have difficulty steering, with all that weight right at the rear axle.

I think if i extend the swing arm and move the shocks to the inside of the swingarm instead of being on the outside the I would have enough room. Maybe extend it 4 to 6 inches. As far as the TC i was thinking something along the same lines as how the original engine and TC was setup just make a plate to hold the driven pulley. Or just have a custom centrifugal clutch made and not deal with the TC.

havent done anymore fab yet, I bought some chain today from a lawnmower shop. It was #40 chain. I'm thinking of going with a smaller axel sprocket to get some more top end. Right now the setup is 10t to 70t as far as a driver clutch I will have to go with a 44 or a 94c the shaft is 1 1/8.

ok, I have been checking on tc parts, I am looking to get a 44c 1 1/8 driver and a 44d driven. what should my center to center measurment be in order to know which belt to get for it? also a 10t sprocket on the TC and a 54t Sprocket on the axel. Any input? how does that setup sound?

This guy is right! I'm putting a 16hp Briggs in my mini monster. Havnt driven it(or had time to work on it) but from moving it around the shop I can tell were definately gonna need wheelie bars.:wai:
I can effortlessly pick up the front end with on hand. Hopefully my fat butt in the middle will help hold it down.:roflol:

I ended up stretching the swing arm to give me some more clearence. Heres how it turned out.... Just about ready to send it off for blasting.

Cut off the lower shock mounts, Marked off my cut.

Swing arm stretched 3 1/2 inches from original position.

New side view with much mor clearence than before.

Put the cage back on, it is fully welded, did away with the bolts, filled the bolt holes and grinded/sanded flush smooth.

Got some lights off of a Commercial truck we were scrapping, along with some other stuff for the kart.

This seat came out of the same truck, waiting for the next one we scrap so I can get me a passenger seat. took the horn, gas and brake pedals, a volt meter and som switches. This seat is so much more comfortable than the ones that came with the kart.

A plug weld or two may be a good idea on the extensions, just to add a little bit more strength

good idea. shouldnt i have drilled those holes before hand though? so the outer tubing is the only one with a hole? or should I drill clean through from one side to the other and weld a piece of round bar in there tieing it all together.

You should have drilled beforehand. There might be a way just to drill through the outer sleeve???
