Tony, that's an old rupp 2 speed set up. They are being reproduced by a company in the stages. I'll post that info later today.
As for how it works.... Engine clutch turns shaft and axle. Once you get to a shaft rpm of the same engagement rpm of the second clutch, it takes over, as it's gear ratio is shorter. The primary driven sprocket then freewheels on a one way bearing. It's quite a simple yet amazing set up.... I'll post a link to it and the info after I get to work.....
