So I picked up a baja racer from my friend yesterday for 70 bucks. From what I can tell that is a good deal since it is running. Currently needs a new spark plug wire and I'm thinking about a new carb since it doesn't have the lever for the fuel on off. Also planning on taking the exhaust off and putting a pipe instead. Any suggestions on what I can do with it would be great. It is a 97cc.

yep, thats a great deal! Even if it was the frame.

Word on the grapevine is that no matter what type of 'performance' modifications you do to those little 97cc engines, you get basically no improvements (pipe, intake, jetting etc).

The predator 212cc you can get at harbor freight is a great deal ~$100, and has a crap ton of performance modifications that you could do to it and see amazing results.

Those 97cc engines are really tough. We ran one wide open with maple syrup for oil and it didn't hurt it until it cooled off and the sugar carmelized the valves open. They don't make much power though, i'd ride it as is and if it don't suit you then swap in a larger engine.

I agree with FHB. Ride what you have, run what you brung. Ride, assess, do a torture test and see if it really lasts--NO maple syrup for oil though. Maybe a Briggs 5hp afterwards?

I'd take off all the warning stickers on the bike and engine, with your trusty HF heat gun of course.

Thanks for scaring away Pooby with the big pic. Life is too short to be surfing the mighty interwebz with a toothpick! I'm hoping G will D him soon to the grave...

I didn't know you could still get dial up, has anyone told poboy that if he drops the landline he'll probably be able to get better internet, losing nothing but the few telemarketers that get through when he's offline?

I got the oil changed, spark plug cleaned, and fixed the wiring situation temporarily. Ran it up the road and got a top speed of 25 wide open on the grip throttle. Couldn't speedo with my finger in the actually engine throttle, but it slows down a lot when I let go of the engine throttle with the grip throttle held, if say 30 mph top. Will take a video in the light tomorrow and Do a few more tunes. I also wire brushed all the rust off the spark generating thing. Can't think of the name.

Got to get the cylinder cleaned. Thinking of using sea foam, any thought on this? I might have the skills to dissemble the engine head, but if I don't have to I would rather bot

Don't clean it. You'll be changing to a predator soon though based on the fact that you were going as fast as it would go with your hand in the governer.

You're going to fit in real well here.

I got 27 out of mine, then I went to a built clone on a methanol/nitromethane blend. It'd much more.fun now (actually riding it generally results in contusions now)

There's a video(?) on the Tube of someone using Sea Foam on a small engine and it shows noticeable, decent results. Lots of smoke generated but it does clean.

If the engine's good and torquey enough, go with it. There's not too many hills around Yorktown.
