hey my name is ethan and me and my friend think that it would be cool to design and build our own go karts. BUT we are complete novices to building go karts. But we have a very large workshop we can use because of my friends dad is a mechanic. Any ideas for where to start?

I'm no expert but I did find out the hard way to do my homework first. This web site helped alot. I bought two go karts from a friend who got themn from a race track on our beaches. They are extremely heavy and they are worn out......can't use anything from them but the steering wheel. Scrounge ask friends neighbors and what ever it takes to get stuff free or cheap to start and just modify your cart thats what I'm doing now. It seems to be working too.

It helps to have a vision of what you want to end up with. I started with trying to get a properly working engine, which I now have. Just yesterday I started drawing up what I want my kart to look like, now I just have to collect the materials and put them together. "Doing your homework" helps a lot too, learn about the engine you will be using and how certain mechanisms like the steering and clutches work. Having the proper knowledge will make everything go by smoother. There is a lot of good information on this forum that you can benefit from, it's just a matter of searching for what you want.

If there's a swap meet in the area (and with summer coming, there should be) there's usually some old frames available at them. otherwise, check craigslist.com, the paper, friends, the dump, scrapyard, etc.

good luck!

a "swap meet" is the same thing as a "flea market" at least where I'm from anyways. look in the paper or the yellow pages for the flea market. check the thrifty nickel if you have one in your area its like a small local classified newspaper. Today I found two adds for carts one for 50.00 (no motor) and one for 135.00 two seater and a motor.:)
