Buildlog first homebuilt UPDATE with vid

This will be a hopefully frequently updated thread showing my progress on my homemade kart. Some of this was covered in my introduction but i realize a lot of people dont read that.

Power is most likely coming from a lil 2hp briggs and stratton unless i can find anything bigger. Gear ratio is gonna be about 8 to 1 maybe a little less.

Right now I have only spent $35 on this kart and most of that was for the bearings, Im hoping on keeping the price pretty low, for now it will be a belt clutch but I may get a cft clutch if I get a more powerful engine.

Steering wheel doesnt have to stay chain its interchangeable, I think its pretty cool but its also really heavy so I plan on having a much lighter one.

Any advice would be appreciated, I know the wheels should be changed, my friend says he'll give me some soon but for now these will work for testing.

If you want any specifics just ask, I'm not sure what the normal measurements to cover are. For now heres my progress pics.

Reminds me of the time I build my first cart. I built it out of a trampoline. It was total junk and never worked.
I think 2.5hp is plenty for that wheel set up...you'll kill yourself with anything more,.

Thanks guys,

ya jmadden, i think ive seen quite a few :D (haha just realized this post is startin to look a lot like boytonstu)

porschedude, ya it is galvanized but i welded outside and took breaks, i think im good.

I'm thinking about making my engine mounting plate big enough to take a hf 6.5 incase I dont feel the 2 hp is enough. And I got my rear axle mounted today, pictures in a little.

I would consider some better tires, those wont hold up for long. I would also do something better for the spindles. Frame is looking good tho.

I have these wheels from an old wooden soapbox car I built, so I'm using them until I get inflatable ones from my friend, right now that all I know about them.

Would you guys recommend using the mounting plate i got from the edger this motor was on and welding that to my frame, or weld to square tubes to my frame and drilling mounting holes into that?

heres a little update, I talked to some of my friends and now we're planning on building a shifter cart and a full suspension buggy, so this project is turning into a fun free project so I just used what I have lying around and hooked up gas, brakes, and a kill switch. I should have the clutch done pretty soon. Once I finish this we should start bigger projects with sizable budgets.

I didnt know if I should start a new topic or just use this one cause its so old but I finally got around to making a quick vid of the kart in its current condition. Quite a bit has changed, I ditched the chain steering wheel because it was too uncomfortable and made my own bending 1/2 pipe by hand, I finally got the new wheels and put them on. I also strengthened the spindles with some 1/4" plate.

The vids just me and my friend spinning around in our pjs on a small gravel patch in my front yard. I shot it with my casio fs10 highspeed camera, its a lot of fun.

Holy crap. The play in those wheels is...just wow. I'll bring a mop for when you crash it.

be careful about how much weight you put on those little tires the rims can split apart
they can be bolted together so the two sides don't split then they hold up ok

never mind saw you have different tires now, they have alot of play though
