Hey guys I've had a 6 hp tecumseh yerf dog kart for years and I've built and rebuilt small engines a hobby so I decided I'd make my own kart.
I got the frame and suspension from an old kart for 50$.
The 11 hp briggs and stratton engine I got for 50 bucks as well. Starter was bad so i had to buy a new one. (100 bucks
) No throttle setup, no gas tank, didn't run right, etc.
I cut the old engine mounting plates out and placed a piece of quarter inch steel diamond plate. I figured the jackshaft needed more reinforcement from the added torque of the big engine, so I welded a piece of the steel plate where I could mount another bearing hanger for extra support. This way, I have 4 wheel bearings and 2 level mounts for the 3/4" jackshaft.
I decided to go with a comet 40 series torque converter setup with a 10 tooth sprocket on the jack-shaft and the 60 tooth that was already on the frame.
I had an old 5 gallon air compressor bottle as the only option for a gas tank, already retro-fitted with a gas cap, so I decided to use it even though it's massive.
Here's pics and a video of the final kart. One vid is from the driver's seat, it's not to good because im getting thrown around, this kart's pretty quick =P
These pics are before all the wiring and final touches were done, including the starter switch. The video does show the final setup though. I have yet to paint it and whatnot.

Total price on the build was about 650 bucks, since the torque converter and jackshaft kit cost about 350. I was able to get the kart up to 35 miles per hour on the street. It is meant mainly as an off road kart, and it is stock governed.
By the way yes, the gas tank's mounted too high, too big, possibility of tipping, etc., etc., blah blah blah I know. If I find another small tank I'll probably put it on there. But for now just know that on a full tank I can go forever and that's awesome =P
Comments, questions, criticisms, are appreciated =)
Cheers
