Usually two very thin sheets of aluminium with aluminium honeycomb between them. It's not very impact resistant. If you drop a screwdriver on it from about 1m high it will leave a big fat dent in it. Much more force and you can punch a hole in it very easily. Like if you were driving off-road and hit a reasonable size stick it would punch right through.

ooo, but that same piece(thin aluminum sheets with honeycomb in the middle) would have good stiffness right?

core construction would also work with wood too right?
like if I was to sandwich sheets of plywood around polyurethane foam, it would have a similar increased stiffness effect right?
