Hello
My go kart feels slow... I've been driving it more and more and it feels like it is getting slower...
I currently have a 5HP Briggs with a 10 tooth clutch to a 53 tooth sprocket... I've been thinking of getting a sprocket with fewer teeth but I can't find a 48 tooth sprocket for a #35 chain and the mounting I need... I have the governor set at 3600 RPM because I feel that any more will destroy my engine😂.

Any suggestions,
mancorider7

Chain is cheap. But the cheapest easiest way to go faster is to remove the Governor.
Why do you think it will destroy your engine? It wont. and it is a free upgrade.

Plus if you have considered getting a Predator, might as well abuse this one to death first.
You probably wont be able to kill it just by removing the Governor.

I have the baaaad feeling that your gear ratio is off..
far off to be honest.

and that this is the main culprit here.

So yeah, if your wheels are NOT 11" in diamter you will not need to install a 48T sprocket anyways since it will not work.

My best guess is you will need a torque converter to be at any way reasonably geared ...

If I can remember, the wheel is 10" or 10.25"... When I get home, I'll take a picture and send it because the engine is way too close to squeeze a torque converter in...

Remove the governor (I did and so have many other Briggs owners). The valves will "float" long before the engine goes critical and you'll be able to discern when valve float occurs because the engine won't be able to rev any faster and you'll experience power loss.

Of course with higher revs comes increased wear but that's true for every engine ever built.

.. WIDE perhaps...

it's likely 18" in diameter.

post a pic of your kart as well.. incl the engine compartement;

I BET it had a torque converter when it left the factory.

1) It has no engine compartment, actually sits right behind the seat. Quite dangerous...
2) you're most likely right about the tire
3) This kart is old.. The engine itself is an '01 and the kart is a MANCO 707 series...

yeah well.. numbers...
he said he had a 705 Manco.. there is NO 705..
there's a 703 (the corvette kids kart) the 706/707 (a two seater)
and a 715 (the indy car)
the first and last run 4.10x3.50x5's the 706 18-9.5 x 8

within that group of potential candidates the 706 is the ONLY one that comes with a half pitched chain (420) the other two come with #35 chain.
(both cent.clutch 6:1 geared ... 12->72)
and there is no #40 sprockets for that six hole wheelmount (not that I know of at least)

half inch? #40? he clearly said #35?!
Yes, he also said he had a six tooth clutch...
the clutch he showed us is a ten tooth, a #35 cent clutch for his engine has 12 teeth as you know.
sooo yes.. #40 chain I suspect.

And that brings us to the last part.. NO, a 5.3:1 ratio on a 706 Manco would not work at all with a cent clutch and five horses...
I totally agree! (it's a heavy beast, tall wheels... not going to go anywhere)

But: I suspect mancorider has a bit of a problem with numbers, with all those small numerical mistakes I've seen so far.. sooo maybe the 53T sprocket is in fact bigger *shrugs*

We'll see...

But yes.. it's a perfect example of WHY we always demand pics...
and this particular thread is :useless:

the 707 has a very NICE engine compartement (that's the cradle the engine sits in.. the SWINGARM so to speak.

The 707 COMES with a torque converter originally.. so it'll surely fit!

without it, you're only going to ruin one clutch after another.
or (which also is an option) you gear so low that you don't but in that case your top speed is maybe 10mph if you're lucky.

BUY A TC! (series 30 TAV clone on ebay)

here's the manual:
https://amsportworks.com/pdfs/gokarts-minibikes/model-707/707_operatorsmanual.pdf

I hope you still have the jackshaft mount (#138) you will need that!

Just for the record... I know for a FACT I have a #35 chain...
in that case the clutch you posted here is not your clutch...
since that's a #40 clutch.

Remember, the TAV can be pointed in a different direction than toward the driven sprocket. ALSO I don't know about a "707" but a lot of the carts that come with stock TAVs originally use a separate jackshaft lift like a sheet metal box with pillow blocks the hold the driven pulley. Also when the jackshaft is factored out, it may seem VERY close to the tire (or where ever the driven sprocket is)
