exceeding 3600rpm

anyone have any idea what i might have to do to an engine to exceed the 'safe' 3600 rpm limit without blowing the motor up or sticking a rod through the block i was thinking using billet rods and an upgraded crank if anyone has any other ideas plz post them

Hmmm.

I'd just buy a larger engine and use a different size sprocket. Or a torque convertor.

I've never run a governor, and I've never exceeded the "blow up the motor limit", not from trying, but just because I never could go any faster than "safe" operating limits I suppose. So I almost wonder if the engine actually can exceed the safe limits under normal operating conditions, without nitrous or something, you know?

Well, if you do go past, yes, you could ruin the engine. I'm just saying that I've never done it, and not for lack of trying...

well, I'm not saying to try to exceed it, or that it's safe!

What I am trying to say is that I've never had a governor, and it's never blown up.

Here's why, I believe.

I think that once the engine reaches the top end, it's really hard to go from 3600 to higher than that.. It's like when you're in fifth gear and you want to go up a hill...

But, say you run your engine and it's only turning a fan, or you're using it as a water pump, I don't know, some other application. I'd fully bet you could exceed 3600 rpm when it's wide open. So, beware!

So, I DON'T RECOMMEND removing your governor, but I will share what's happened to me in my experience.

ok thanks i wasent sure about the whole 3600 rpm thing and how easy it goes over 3600 and what you said makes sense

You have to remember that these engines were designed to be held at full throatle for hours at a time, so you would expect that 3600 rpm would be well within the safe opperating rev range.

I DON'T RECOMMEND TRYING TO EXCEED THE FACTORY SPECS OF THESE ENGINES.

Can anyone tell us how to exceed the factory 3600rpm? is it as simple as removing the governor or do you need to replace the carb completely?

its not easy however i believe if you wish to do so you would have to upgrade things like the crant and rod and perhaps the piston with either billet or stronger steel pieces and then you would have to remove the govenor and add some power either by upgrading the carb or incerasing comperssion or the easiest thing would be to re jet the carb and run it on alcohol or a mix and of alcohol and gas called gasahol but for all that work its not really worth it unless your going to race it.

A great way to increase rpms is upgrade the cam this site has cams that will keep making horsepower into the 9800 rpm! Be care full though, some require billet lifters and beefing up the tappet bores. Request a catalog from them, its free and they have alot of great stuff.
