My Tecumseh engine currently is having trouble getting spark. The magnet on the flywheel is about 1/3 of an inch away from the magneto( I think that's what you call it). Is it to far away? There is also the small metal square that is on the magneto that's closest to the magnet, it seems to have some blue threads (like fabric on it). Is that supposed to be there? Should I take it off? Thanks

Ok, I have a white and bluish spark now. When I don't have the plug inserted, and I pull the cord, it creates a spark. When it is installed, it should do the same thing, right? I'm trying to figure out if it's a ground wire problem or something else. Even when I spray starter fluid in it, it still won't fire. Any tricks to get it to go?

Take the magneto off and rotate the engine to TDC. Put a piece of paper between the flywheel and the magneto. Bolt the magneto back on and rotate the engine to BDC and remove the paper. This has worked every time for me. Hope this helps!

Put a piece of paper
.010" absolute minimum. Paper (typically) is only .004", or less than half of factory spec.
When it is installed, it should do the same thing, right?
Yes.
If plug is serviceable engine should fire.
Remove plug and pour in a teaspoon of gas into cylinder.
Replace plug and crank it over. Should run after 1 to 3 pulls no choke.

Starting fluid is fine. As long as your not constantly using it to fire the engine, you are good. But use gas when you can

Thanks to info found in this forum, I have found standard business cards to be particularly effective for this. Makes it a no-brain setup. Slide the card in place, Loosen the bolts, let the magnets pull the coil lamination into place, snug everything down, pull out the card, way you go...

To meet factory specs, go for a set of feeler gauges.

I have had new plugs that refuse to fire in older engines but will fire in new engines.
Sometimes resistor equipped plugs are the culprit.
What is plug number, and is it new and gapped to spec?

Did you take off the fly wheel.
I dont work on BnS motors but I guessing it may be out of time or you have a air leak.

It's a Tecumseh, not a Briggs. And the spark plug is new, I think the number is RN4C or something like that, I will find out the real number soon. The plug is made by Champion if that helps. I am getting spark now, maybe it is not big enough to ignite the fuel though? How could I change the timing on it?

If you can see/hear spark, I would say you have plenty.
Did you try a teaspoon of gas in plug hole no choke with throttle 1/3 open?
Should run for a short burst to a couple of seconds if everything else is correct.
What model Tecumseh?

I will try the gas in plug hole thing today. The engine model is OHH55, it's a 5.5 hp powersport

Never mind, my new pull start assembly just broke, and I can't repair it. I think I will just get a harbor freight clone, i already sunk over 80 bucks into this engine and I don't want to put anymore in. Is the shaft size for the clone 3/4 inch with a 5/16 keway, I just don't want to have to buy a new clutch now.
