Never missing the opportunity to create problems for myself, I found a clean vintage Snowmobile motor in great shape. It is a JLO/Rockwell 2F440-4 Fanner (440 engine of roughly 40 HP, 5 ports 2 stroke). I am messaging it into shape in hopes of using it on an off road kart that I currently have a Honda 200 motorcycle engine on it (shifting is a pain on trails).

Unfortunately, as is common when buying engines, it has a solid primary or drive clutch, but it is missing the Driven or secondary clutch. Finding info on it is difficult, but appears to be a Salsbury clutch made in LA, CA (think was bought by Comet some time ago). It looks totally different from other clutchs out there, but found a picture on an old high performance John Deere sled. It is believed to be a Salsbury 850, but don't know. I have attached a picture.

So, big question. I would believe that a suitable Driven clutch could be found if it is rated for the power and has the same side angles for a belt (believed to be 75 degrees). I know the spacing may require some trial and error, but I think I can do it. I would imagine most Driven units on most older 440 engines and perhaps even smaller newer units could handle the power. Replacing the clutch I have is possible, but fittment of a different clutch could be an issue, and they can get spendy. Thoughts are welcome.

Regards,

Russ

That secondary looks like the one on my kart. I have a 440 off an LTD sled. Do you know how wide your belt should be? You could probably google it to find the belt size. I could compare it to mine.

The drive or primary is 9" in diameter (freaking huge), and the inner diameter is 2" in the center of the clutch. The root or inner length is 1", and it is 2.5" at the top. With some simple trig (law of sins), I get something close to a 20 degree flank on each side.

So, the belt would need to be at least 1" in diameter on th inner side. Not sure how thick belts are.

Ok, Engine runs like a champ. Setting up the points was fairly easy, and the fire is stronger than any electronic ignition I have seen. Primary CVT looks functional and operates at the prescribed 3000 RPM. Still looking for a Driven that will work with it.

Some additional data. The Rockwell engine is Metric. The output shaft is 30mm. The gap between the Primary (Drive) sheaves is also 30mm, on a 1.875" diameter. The Salsbury CVT is Imperial being from the US.

What is the typical belt width for sled motors CVT? Thoughts are welcome, Kinda stuck.....
