Installed a stage 2 kit with a hot265 cam and 22 pound springs on a 196 clone. Set valve lash to .003 on intake and exhaust slightly past TDC on compression stroke.

Checked lash multiple times. Engine is still super hard to pull and the recoil snaps out of your hand crazy fast. Any ideas? I’m about to rip my hair out.

With the kill switch set to "off" (no spark), pull rope, if it's still too hard to pull its the valve lash that's the problem.

If it's easier to pull, theres too much ignition timing advance.

Are you 100% sure the cam and crank is at dot to dot????

When setting valve lash, are you turning crank passed compression release on the exhaust valve, then setting lash on both.

The best way i have found to do this,

After you see the compression release bump on the exhaust rocker, keep turning the crank (clockwise, flywheel side) until the crank keyway (pto side) is lined up with the cylinder.

This has both lifters still on the cam's base circle.

Double checked that the cam and crank timing is correct.

When setting lash id turn it a couple degrees past TDC on the compression stroke. I’d find TDC by taking the plug out and shining a light in the hole or putting a pencil in the hole, then set lash on both.

Will try your method tomorrow
