Engine trouble...

Ok, so i'm trying to fix up a leaf blower engine. it is a one cylinder engine. when you pull on the start cord, it doesn't pull smoothly. upon inspection, the piston seems to go up, stop then go down. It just jerks up, then down. I'm not sure if i can fix this or what to do... Any ideas?

Sounds like bad crankshaft journal or blown bearings.
Could simply be a loose rod cap. Bad news if it has needle bearings. Will have to disassemble to evaluate.
