I just got done building my son a go cart. (5.5 honda ) Very fast and very fun. I got a good deal on another frame and I am planning on making me a cart. lol

I also have access to a cpl of different motors. I was lookign at a 11-22 hp range. All Honda motors. My question is most clutches I have found at local stores are all only rated for up to 8hp motors. Any idea if these will work for a 16hp motor? If not any ideas as to where to get one? This is strictly for me to ride and it is a single seat Buggie. I am looking for a Clutch/Chain setup for a 1inch shaft.

those will NOT work for a 16 hp. theres so much power in those they will just keep the clutch spinning and not completely lock up, then it will burn it out and ur facked. invest in a good racing clutch. you can find them on ebay if your on a budget.

or a good torque converter.... will let you run the top end higher so you can thrash the boy!

I went to Noram's site, What are the Pro's and con's of Belt drive vs Chain?

Looks like a chain driven clutch is gonna cost me around $130-200..(Ouch)

I admit that I'm not an expert on this but I use chain clutches only. Chains don't slip. Belts by their very nature do slip and I avoid them for that reason. Hopefully someone will chime in here to give you a better answer than I can.

Yea I would prefer Chain as I am plannig on doing a little off roading with this thing. They make a Torqaverter for this size but do I really need it with a 18-22hp motor?

I've read some good stuff about Torq-A-Verters but know nothing about them. I have a rather unorthodox power plant on my kart and not sure if it would event mount to my setup.
Maybe someone will step up and help us both out.

is your kart live axle? if it is then you have 2 options that are very simple, but because of the hp, expensive. i prefer a gokart racing clutch over anything because they can be re built and they will last, or you can get a torque converter, but the ones for this hp are just the 2 pulleys and the belt, you need to set up your own jackshaft to run it, or in the case your running live axle, ive seen setups they have one pulley on the axle and one on the pto shaft of the engine. which works well. i had a video of that setup let me look

It is a live axle. I am leaning towards the Racing clutch. And yes they are fairly expensive. But now that I have gotten the Go cart fever this will not be my last cart that is for sure. Here is the link for the cart that I picked up.

I will be going with at least a 16Hp motor. I looked at the torque a verters, but I was not sure how to hook the thing up or if I would even have clearance to have one.

Any suggestions for a decent Race Clutch that won't break the bank.

true, but you get what you pay for. if you go and buy a cheetah or a noram they will last you... a long time.


but by the looks of those HUGE rear wheels, you will be better off with a torque converter.

SnowMobile engine for your Kart?.... Maybe?

Maybe an old snowmobile engine and torque converter set up? A friend picked up a 436cc twin and the converter for $50 and wants me to build something with it. The converter is BEEFY, and runs a #60 sprocket on the output shaft. I know the single cylinder 300cc models are good for about 18hp......? This engine is frightening to hear it run... the engagement rpm is 6000 rpm, and the hp peak (?) is at 8500 rpm. This would be right up Russ2251's area of expertise!!! Personally, ONLY if I find a single cylinder and converter CHEAPLY, would I ever try something like this. Your kart looks like it could handle it easily, though.
