hey all, i bought my first go kart today,

it is a streaker fun kart,

briggs and stratton 5hp

model 135212

type 0184 01

code 9408242e

when i pull start it, it will fire up and shut right off, i did see a tube on the left side of the carb with grommet at either end that are dry rotted, so i ordered those, any other ideas or maybe a website to help explain cleaning the carb on this engine

also is there a 10hp engine that is plug and play from briggs i could upgrade the cart with...

or could i swap out this briggs with my honda 11hp motor

has the motor been sitting for a long time? if so it probably needs a very thorough carb clean. I had the same thing. we think that by starting it again, it stirred up a bunch of crud. I hope this helps

If its a flat head, that tube is just an oil return line, sort of like a pcv valve. The carb probably needs a new diaphram. Very easy and inexspensive to do. Also pull the jet out and make sure the two holes behind it aren't clogged.

lets see... 4 or 5 bolts holding that diaphram cover on. take it off and try to not lose them. replace the part inside.

i agree with cleaning the jets.

the rubber parts arent needed to run the engine, they just vent the crank case. you could even modify that and just connect a section of tube to the breather.

hey guys so i did go ahead and pull the carb off today and ran about 3 cans of parts cleaner thru it, its now shiny and clean, i took the diafram off, and under the diafram there is a spring with a circle on top of the spring i cleaned it all out,

however i am unsure of what you mean by jet, where is the jet,

also i was able to start it and when i did it revs up and then down and up and down, i finally figured out there was a screw on the right side, i turned it all the way in and then back out 1 full turn and about a half turn the engine idles fine,

with the engine idleing fine i rode it abpout 50 yards and it shuts off, i restart it and the same thing happens any ideas,

Try starting it with the gas cap off. Could be breather problems pressure build up in the gas tank

sounds extemley stupid, but if the above idea works, theres a little peice of cardboard in there with holes, when mine had this problem i was playing with the peice and accidently folded it in half creating tiny holes down the middle, funny thing is, it stopped acting up

Not stupid at all, i had the same problem pressure build in the tank and floods the engine.

your idea wasnt stupid, my idea of folding it in half at the time to me was stupid,

No not stupid at all i did the same thing and on my other kart what i did was drilled a 1/8 hole installed a gas hose with a gas tank fuel line filter so wont suck dust in.

Well he already spent money on 3 cans of carb cleaner, it has dry rotted parts on it and doesn't know how to clean it already.

My point was some people don't know you can get a remanufactured one for a low price.
