unfortunately no other cam and head to try.waiting on head gaskets to come in tomorrow ordered 2 at 0.009" and 1 at 0.045" to see if this put it back to normal pull and was thinking of trying the stock key or 8 degree key to see what seems better. I read some racers setting lash at 0.003" intake and 0.005" when cold. Do you guys think the lash would be better at any different gap other than the 0.002" intake and 0.003" exhaust? Any opinion on best timing also? ok I doubled the 0.009 gaskets didn't changes then I put the 0.045" gasket in its easy until tdc on compression stroke then very hard for a brief moment. No change the compression should've gotten easier to pull with a gasket that thick but no change. I read a post and someone was saying when spinning the crank backwards it doesnt engage the compressin release on the cam so I spun the engine backwards and it feels exactly the same. So I think the compression release might not be engaging but i hear air unless thats just the pulse of the valve cover making the little poof sound. Anybody know what to do to the cam or anything?
Perhaps the compression relief isn't working. Since I've totally lost track of what you've done to your valvetrain, I can only guess...
Has anything been done that would alter the physical distance between the cam lobe and valve? Decked the block? Shaved the head? (head gasket!) Anything to alter the valves themselves, rockers, pushrods? Cam profile? Once any of these is out of spec, then the valve lash spec becomes guesswork as far as the compression relief is concerned.
Jeez you have a lot done to your engine. There's really a lot of things that it can be. Honestly, it could be your compression release and you might just be over thinking it. When I lost the compression release to a stock tecumseh 5 hp, it was extremely hard to start with the rope. The best part is when you don't get the piston on the right stroke, and you pull with all your force causing the piston to go flying downward, pulling you along with it. lol
I recently has heads shaved and ported thats when it all began I have used my 1/2 cordless drill to crank it lots of time when the rope broke not its burning the drill it seems like thats how I spun the engine backwards and it did exaclty the same as trying to crank it. would valve lash have to be tight or loose to have a positive influence on the compression release?
Yes- if there's too much lash (loose) it will cause the compression relief to lose effectiveness. Now- It should be said that that's a "stock" statement. With the mods you've done, it is possible to have your lash to spec (according to your parts supplier) and yet have a problem with the compression relief- which was, after all, designed to work with a stock valvetrain.
Took valve lash to almost 0 lash, spins easier, 2 rotations exhaust open, intake open, then hard spot. Now sounds like pressure coming out of the header, also pulled the spark plug and getting no gas. Any ideas appreciated.
