Hey guys, I got a problem which bothers me for a while. My engine wouldn't stay running and stalls almost every time. Yesterday i decided to open the carb and clean it. I cleaned every part of it's components. Unclogged the jets etc. Mounted it up on it's place and gave it a try but the problem is still there. It starts with the choke pulled and stalls without it. Sometimes i can get it to run without the choke by giving short throttles but as long as i try to give it more gas it goes down and i have to pull the choke to keep it running. Any idea?

Make sure you cleaned all passageways in the carb body as well!
(there are small air veines, that tend to clog over time)
run a bit of fishing line (mono filament) through each and every hole you can see on the carb body...
(if we know the carb model [pics] we might be able to be more specific ;))

boil the carb again in lemon juice (remove all plastic parts first) if necessary.

if that's done and good,
the issue sounds like a leakage ...
some gasket ripped, installed incorrectly or something..

make sure all gaskets are good and installed properly.

choke, throttle the air down (and effectively richens the fuel mix)
So check your fuel adjustment after you made perfectly sure all jets and passages are clean.

If your engine is a Honda GX-series or clone, you should also make sure the plastic insulator (between the carb & intake) has been Installed in the correct orientation. They will leak (suck air) causing a severe lean condition if accidentally installed upside down...

ah a vm20 (22?) anyways.. a bit more difficult to get into those veines with mono filament
(some nasty bends :()
Here's a good video about how to disassemble it and clean it..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOJlHIUUBk0

he removes the floats you can stop disassembling it further
(you can leave all brass parts on the carb, although it helps if you remove the two jet screws)
then boil it in lemonjuice (citric acid.. not fresh juice of course ;))
IMHO that works as good or better than highly toxic carb cleaners.. plus it's eco friendly ;)
(boil for an hour. and yes stir occasionally)

After that, follow his advice again regarding the compressed air
if you don't have a compressor, no worries, a bike foot pump works just nicely..
you only need short strong bursts not a crazy amount of volume really.

reassemble
check the tips of all needles are straight.
check all gaskets, grommets and seals to be in good condition.

I bought a used carb. Had the wrong jet in it. Doesn't matter how clean you get it. It might be working like it was designed to. Just wrong part. I had the exact same issue. My 2c. Hope it helps
