Engine cuts out on bumps.

I have a Briggs Intek 206 7hp motor on my gokart, you can see pictures of it here: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showpost.php?p=97420&postcount=104 . I have removed the governor and the throttle linkage is connected directly to the carb.

It runs great on smooth ground but any bumps cause the engine to stall temporarily. Rough ground is not fun because the gokart surges and cuts out all the time.

I've disconnected the kill switch wire to see if that was it but there was no change. The oil level is good, but I'm not sure if this engine even has any oil level cutoff or not.

Any advice is appreciated.

Most of these newer type Briggs engines seem to have a low oil sensors and it does sound like that's whats causing your issue here. This link shows that several of the 6.5hp/206 Intek's are equipped with an oil sensor: http://www.jackssmallengines.com/bs65intekpro.html
Post the Briggs model # of your engine and maybe we can dig up some info confirming if its got a sensor or not.

I found the exact manual for this engine from Briggs and it doesn't definitely say if it has an oil sensor or not. If it did would there be an extra wire going to the coil, or what visible signs (preferably on the outside of the engine) would I be looking for?

to the front of the kart there should be a wire comin outa the block of the engine... mabey a yellow wire? and it should go to the kill switch.

There are no other wires going to the kill switch.

Follow the kill switch wire back to the coil to be sure that there isn't something wired into the circuit that isn't immediately visible.

Many of the newer intek styled engines had a weak float intentionally from the factory (so i'm told, I love briggs but I can rationalize why they would not want their engines on karts from their standpoint and history.)

If you have no low oil shut-off then you simply have a weak float and will never be able to remedy this problem aside from making an aluminum adapter and fitting another carb to this engine.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure, I'm positive you could buy some sort of nice tilly or mikuni carb and mount that but you'd need to custom build an adapter perhaps out of aluminum, are you in school and have the resources of a shop class or are you in the adult world?

So what is the problem exactly then? I didn't know anything about carburetors so I did a bit of reading and tried to learn. When the engine is bouncing around, does it cause the float to turn off the supply of gas which then starves the engine? Are there no mods I can do to the carb to fix this problem? Why didn't the older briggs have this problem?

The older briggs were not float bowl, they were diaphragm gasket carbs that pumped fuel up from the tank to the engine. The float regulates your world, its just the way they designed this engine man. They had legal problems from Murray (so I'm told) and they designed their engines not to be easy on karts, governor hard to get to, weak float, etc.

Well I think I fixed the problem. I took the carb apart, sprayed carb cleaner through every orifice and tightened the spark plug and it seems to be working fine now. If it gives me trouble in the future and I suspect it's the carb I've found some cheap carbs on ebay that should fit this engine, so I'll just replace it. I may even get more power out of the engine that way since a 22mm carb will fit and the stock one on this engine is only 18mm.

Well it's not fixed. I ordered a replacement 22mm slide carb and air filter that should bolt right on. We'll see if that fixes the problem.

Chef, this thread is a wee bit old... You'd be better to start a new thread in the engine section detailing your problem. Welcome to the forum.

I believe I replied to your PM, but I'll put the info here for all to see. I purchased a 22mm XR50 carb on ebay that had the same intake size as my carb. I had to modify it a bit with a dremel to get it to fit, but once it was all mounted up it works great.

I think it is running a bit lean though so I have to spend some time drilling out the main jet or finding a bigger one. But the bump-stall issue is gone for sure.
