Engine cage question

Hey all,

I have what is apparently a Tomberlin crossfire 150r.

I want to put a bigger engine on it, either a 420cc or a 670cc predator.

The engine cage is super tiny and small. The cage pieces that go over the top are not supporting any weight and are not attached to anything but the bottom frame.

Can I just cut them off or do they provide structural support?

They do provide some rigidity to the swing arm assembly. They also appear to act as the bump stops so you don't dynamite your shocks.

I would bet you can still shoehorn a 420 in there, particularly if you run a remote fuel tank.

So I just went and took another look. If they were used as bump stops they'd ram right into the tank so I don't think they're for that.

I also took a look at the axle and the sprocket hub and brake disk hub are both welded to the axle. Is that normal? I suppose I could just get a new sprocket hub and leave the old one on and move the drive sprocket over.

Not sure where the tank could go. I could probably put some risers in where it's at now and get it up a few more inches. That should do for top clearance.

I only have 11" from the bottom bar of the frame to the underside of the cage bar and 11" between the two cage bars.


Would taking out just one bar be the end of the world?

Ohhh...I get it. Didn't even think that the 420cc came with a gas tank. Sure, I could take that off and just use the one on the frame.

Welding things onto the axle is NOT the done thing!!!! Has the axle got a keyway?

No keyway or notch or anything I can see. Haven't unbolted the sprocket yet.

No that's a factory welded hub(s). Need to dismount and remove the wheels, might need to take the bearings off aswell if the sprocket/disc can't fit over them...
