I am looking at upgrading my Tecumseh Powersport 6.0 engine to a new engine. I am currently considering a clone or a predator. Can anyone provide me with feedback either good or bad for these? I am looking for something in the 200 cc range that I can gradually upgrade with better parts and mods in order to increase both torque and rpm...

I like the predator, it's decent. My only complaints are
1) that the air filter is a crappy sponge instead of a paper filter. 2) The decals for the throttle/choke were peeling off out of the box.

It's worth the $100 though, they are pretty reliable. If you are worried about it breaking, just make sure you break it fast so you can get a new one within the return policy guidelines. If you want to break it slowly, just buy an extended warranty/replacement plan.... If you plan on not breaking it any time soon, just don't "mod" it, (which will make the engine wear out much faster than it should). You can, however, adjust the governor a little or buy a better exhaust/filter/carb/flywheel/... But by that time you could have bought a better motor with more "stock" power.

This is just my opinion below, modifying may be what you have your heart set on.

If you want more torque, buy a bigger engine or change the gearing.

If you want higher rpms, buy a dirt bike engine or a small motorcycle engine, or racing engine. These were all built for speed, without any mods.

What would be a good out of the box engine that would offer more power but wont cost me more than about $300?

Search: "Lifan 125cc" if you want something fast and economical, but you will probably have to seriously modify your kart. The engine runs about $225.

If your kart just has a centrifugal clutch on the shaft, then spend 120-200$ on a torque converter (probably your BEST BET) and jack-shaft: search "30 series TAV"

If there isn't much wrong with your current engine, just see if you can up the rpms by increasing the governed RPM's (don't ask me for advice on that, that's what google is for, do it at your own risk).

Grann- Does that Lifan price include everything? Intake, exhaust, carb, CDI? Sometimes they don't come with.

A Predator is a clone...

Keep in mind, no matter what warranty you have, as soon as you mod it, the warranty is gone...
