Electromagnetic Clutches

Considering modifying one off an AC compressor, but I'm worried about slippage under acceleration... And since it's going on an electric go kart, no worries about sudden engagement issues.

Also want to use this for less drag as well as regen braking D:

I've actually used an EM Clutch on one of my first belt-tensioner go-karts. I had a standard foot-clutch pedal setup, and the electric clutch was there as a failsafe so the thing wouldn't take off if for any reason. It also allowed me to push the cart when the motor was off.

Locked up perfectly everytime, zero slippage.

Sweet. Now I had a question (after burning out a Jeep e-clutch), does the electromagnetic coil use a resistor? I just plugged a newer Jeep's coil straight to a 12v battery and shorted it out almost immediately :'(

And I assume there's three pieces, one freewheeling plate that locks to another plate once the coil is energized...

So my other question... how close does the coil get to the plate closest to it? I don't think it actually touches, correct?

Why do you need a clutch on an electric kart?

Because it's an electric motor, and a big one at that :\ That extra friction when pushing around a kart when it inevitably will fail is a PITA... and I wanted to work around and create my own little regen controller later on, so I can lock back up the clutch during braking... ect :)

And because I'm cheap, I'm using what I can get easily :3

That's a heck of a cool idea!!! I guess it made starting and warmup easier, too.

What was the name of that clutch, I would like to experiment with one.
