electrical output

Hi all....I have a question...the motor I have is a 8 hp briggs and stratton and I found a wire hanging off the back...its a positive wire..not sure how many volts for sure..but I hooked a headlight bulb up to it and at idle it lit up..when I revved the motor up it gets brighter....any idea what kind of output it is...can I use it to charge a battery and run lights off the battery? Thanks in advance...love the site!

Well I looked up the model number and it did come with a altenator but how do I use it? Wire it to a battery? Like a car? Just wanting to make sure I don't blow myself up hehehe

u need a voltage regulator on it and yes u would hook it up to a batt

I use to do old air cooled vw's long ago and they had a voltage regulator on them but it had more hook ups than for 1 wire...that's alll I seen comming out of the motor...I'm wanting to run the juice to a battery and then to head lights and maybe tail lights and a cigerette lighter plug...any help is appreciated..

Your bugs probably would of had generators, probably what the Briggs has (not an alternator). Could you please post some picture of your engine? Is there a model-type-code on your engine? If so, what is it?

Yer there to recharge the batts after starting. They are usually on lawn tractors which have lights and starter motors. Just get a voltage regulator and then wire it through the voltage regulator. 3A is a nice voltage to charge the batt up with. You wouldnt want 5A because it will decrease battery life.

Well guess what I found out..I hooked up driving lights, made a small battery box, hooked the negative of the battery to the chassis, then I took the wire comming off the engine and hooked it to the positive of the battery. ....I heard sizzeling...WTF???? I unplugged and started the engine to make sure all was ok..still getting output from alternator...but found out its AC! Wtf??? So its giving me roughly 6 volts at idle and 12ish at fast but its in ac....so now im trying to figure out how to change ac to dc...going with something they call a bridge rectifier. .100volts 2amp ac in..100volts 2amp dc out...haven't tried it yet but if anyone has some electrical knowhow in this please HELP! Thanks
